Monument to the Victims of 10 March, in Recimil (2003)

The 'Monument in honour of the Victims of 10 March' was inaugurated in 1990 on a corner of the working-class neighbourhood of Recimil. Just 100 metres away the equestrian statue of Franco still stood in the middle of Espaņa Square, the area destined during the Franco regime for housing naval and army officers, as well as for the shipyard managers. The two monuments were placed practically opposite each other, each in their own neighbourhood, and are symbolic of the conflicting coexistence of opposing policies of memory. Meanwhile, the memory of the 'Events of 10 March' had been intensified since the democratic trade unions had named the anniversary celebration as the 'Working-Class Day in Galicia'.
