Car park under construction in Espaņa Square (2004)

In 2000 the new city council called for proposals to remodel Espaņa Square, under which a new car park would be built. The aim was both to offer new parking spaces to residents and users of businesses and services in La Magdalena, making it possible to free up the streets and finally make them pedestrian. The second aim, which was not made so clear in the project, was to take advantage of the work to remove the statue of Franco once and for all. A previous socialist council had already proposed the idea in 1985, although it had not been possible. Finally, the monument was removed in 2002 and the car park opened two years later.
