Franco's statue painted pink by activists (2000)

In 1999 the left wing came back into power in Ferrol. The new municipal corporation proposed removing the monument to Franco, which still lorded over the Espaņa Square. Finally, on 19 November 2000 a group of activists who sympathized with radical Galician nationalism climbed onto the statue and painted it pink. The next day, 20 November, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the dictator's death, the news was given extensive coverage in the media, both nationally and internationally. Meanwhile, a poll in the newspaper La Voz de Galicia revealed that the city was split 50/50 regarding whether or not to remove the statue.
