Monument to Concepción Arenal, in the Esteiro district (2003)

Finding itself helpless to eradicate the places of memory of Franco's dictatorship scattered throughout the city, the first democratic councils attempted to develop an alternative policy, based on monuments in honour of working-class heroes. Close to the monument to Pablo Iglesias, in Las Angustias Square, a statue in honour of Concepción Arenal was inaugurated in 1986. An illustrious writer and social reformer who was born in the city, she dedicated much of her life throughout the nineteenth century to improving conditions for women, particular at work and in prisons.
