Democracy
Monument to Pablo Iglesias, founder of the PSOE (2003)

The first two left-wing councils that governed Ferrol after the return of democracy, between 1979-87, were not able to deal decisively with the problem of having numerous 'souvenirs' of the old regime scattered throughout the city. It was only at the end of their time in office, during 1986-7, that the town council seems to have found a way of developing places of memory paying tribute to its more progressive citizens, who were associated with the defence of the working class. Two statues dedicated to Concepción Arenal and Pablo Iglesias - the founder of the Spanish Socialist Party - were erected in the Esteiro neighbourhood.
