Statue of Franco in Narón with posters against the Iraq War (2003)

After the death of Franco, and with the arrival of democracy, the places of memory of Franco's regime were given a new purpose. Like the case of the group of sculptures featuring monuments to General Franco and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, their original significance is so far removed from reality that the simplest (and most frequent) solution has usually been to refuse to consider the problem. New arrivals on the scene have even offered a new, more humorous interpretation. As part of the demonstrations that took place throughout Spain against the Iraq War in the spring of 2003, somebody decided to hang this poster from Franco's statue.
