Statue of Franco in Narón, after being attacked with explosives (2004)

From 2000 onwards, the debate about the ever-present shadow cast by places of memory of Franco's dictatorship went beyond the academic sphere and entered the pages of the press. In November 2003, coinciding with the 28th anniversary of the dictator's death, a local conference was held about repression under the dictatorship in the region of Ferrol. Coinciding with the event, an unknown group set off an explosive device under the statue of Franco in Narón, on the outskirts of Ferrol. Shortly afterwards the city council of Naron decided to remove the monument once and for all.
