Astano workers block the road into Ferrol (1988)

From the end of the 1970s the Spanish government applied a hard-line policy of industrial rationalization, in order to adjust the public shipbuilding industry to the new conditions of the world market and the directives imposed after joining the European Economic Community. While Astano was prohibited from building more ships, its subsequent directors were incapable of designing an alternative strategy; the company took on major losses, and the workforce was reduced from 10,000 to 1,500 employees. Over two decades, faced with each new employment regulation imposed by the company's directors, Astano's workers marched towards the city over the Bridge of 'As Pías', blocking the road into Ferrol.
