Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Espaņa Square, with the statue of Franco (1970)

The new Espaņa Square was surrounded on all four sides by elegant buildings housing institutional headquarters (such as the Bank of Spain and Social Security Institute), and homes for the naval and army officers, as well as for the shipyard managers. Spatial segregation was once again present: on one hand, around Espaņa Square, the city of the Navy and the middleclass, and on the other, the working-class city in the adjacent neighbourhood of Recimil; and the statue of Franco, erected in 1967, rising between both.
