Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
España Square, without the statue of Franco (c. 1960)

After annexing the neighbouring town of Serantes in 1940, the extra land meant that the city could now spread beyond its walls. The guidelines came from the 'New Suburban Development Master Plan' of Rey Pedreira, dating from 1930. The 'Ensanche', (or 'suburban development work') outside the city walls was carried out along the Castilla Road, renamed the Avenue of the 'Generalísimo' (an honorary title given to the dictator, literally 'General of Generals'). The connection between the Avenue and La Magdalena was made by building the magnificent España Square, which was planned from the outset around a monument dedicated to Franco. As it surpassed the most urgent needs - and budget - of the city, España Square was not completed until 1953.
