Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Wedding portrait (c. 1940-5)

During the Civil War all of the political forces that supported the military revolt were joined in the fascist party known as the 'Falange'. The organization had been founded by Josť Antonio Primo de Rivera, converted into a 'martyr' after his execution by firing squad at the hands of the republicans. After the war the 'Falange' became an integral part of the regime, spreading into all kind of organizations. Membership increased, and men and women would wear the characteristic blue shirt when out strolling. The dress uniform of the Falange was worn by holders of certain public posts, such as the members of the city council. The image shows how it was also used as a wedding suit.
