Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
New names for the streets of Ferrol (1945)

After the Civil War, the policies of memory of the Franco regime were upheld with great intensity, particularly in La Magdalena. The construction of monuments (such as the 'Cruz de los Caidos'), and the organization of rituals dedicated to the 'founding fathers' raised the profile of the neighbourhood. Its main street was now called 'General Franco Street'. The names of other military leaders were also used, such as General Aranda, and politicians like Joaquin Calvo Sotelo (the leader of right-wing organizations during the Second Republic) or José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the 'Falange'.
