Paying tribute to the flag in front of the Arms Hall (c. 1970)

After the founding of Bazán, the arsenals were finally split in two; on one side the public shipyards, and on the other a naval base under military discipline. The former Arms Hall served as a centre for military instruction for Navy recruits. In the image we see the act of 'paying tribute to the flag', which was obligatory for recruits at the end of their training. Meanwhile the Spanish Navy was becoming more and more obsolete, its flagship being the helicopter carrier 'Dédalo', a former cargo boat reconverted by the US Navy during the Second World War, and sold to Spain in 1967.
