Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Franco attends the launching of a warship at Bazán (1951)

In 1936 the State seized the shipyards and dockyards of the Spanish Society of Shipbuilding. During the war, Ferrol played a strategic role as the most important pro-Franco centre for the construction, repair, and provisioning of warships. In 1940 the shipyards were nationalized, and seven years later they were reorganized as the Public Company Bazán, its main job being to supply the Navy. The photograph was taken at the launching of a warship. On the stand we see Franco surrounded by dignitaries, including the bishop who had come to bless the launching personally.
