Mass at Astano: the Archbishop gives communion (1957)

Every year the workers of Astano were called to a mass in the factory, to ensure they fulfilled the Easter precept of confessing and taking communion at least once a year. The essence of what has come to be known as 'National-Catholicism' lay mainly in the fact that in return for ensuring a Catholic state and the granting of important privileges, the Catholic Church gave religious legitimacy to Franco's regime. In the image we see Monsignor Quiroga Palacios, Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela and personal friend of Franco, giving communion to the workers at Astano.
