Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Ships built in Ferrol (1860-1985)

Aid from the State and its patronage undoubtedly played a role in the reactivation of the shipbuilding industry in Ferrol. The public shipyards in Esteiro underwent a period of expansion in the 1880s. There were new periods of growth after being leased to the Spanish Society of Shipbuilding, particularly during the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera in the 1920s. A new golden era arrived when the State seized the naval installations during the Spanish Civil War and in the post-war period, when they were reorganized in the 1940s as the 'Public Company Bazán', its main job being to supply the Navy. For the next 30 years at least one vessel of over 6,000 metric tonnes was launched annually.
