Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Statues of Franco and the Sacred Heart of Jesus (2002)

The Franco regime resorted to policies of memory which portrayed the Second Republic as a period dominated by poverty and anarchy, and the military uprising and Civil War as a 'Crusade' against communism and in defence of Catholicism. Anyone leaving Ferrol towards the north along the coast road would soon pass two life-size statues, 100 metres apart from each other that appeared to be heading towards each other: in the foreground, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Francisco Franco in the background.
