Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Launching of the 'Artemision', at Astano (1963)

In 1967 the closure of the Suez Canal, as a result of the Six-Day War, led the major oil companies to make huge investments in order to build large oil tankers that were capable of transporting crude oil economically going round the continent of Africa. At this time the shipbuilding industry of Ferrol went through one of its most buoyant moments. Astano experienced rapid growth, particularly from 1962 onwards when the 'First State Development Plan' made major investments in the area of Ferrol, allowing the company to adapt its installations. In 1963 the cargo boat 'Artemision' was launched, weighing some 30,000 metric tonnes. Astano's specialization in building large oil tankers became official in 1973, when the company was purchased by the National Institute of Industry.
