Proclamation of the Second Republic, in front of the Capitanía Palace (1931)

At the elections held on 14 April 1931 the Republican and Socialist Parties won an absolute majority in Ferrol, guaranteeing that the city would have a socialist mayor. On the same day, as in other Spanish cities, the council proclaimed the fall of the monarchy of Alfonso XIII and the rise of the Second Republic. The next day a demonstration was held in the city, and it was required that the republican flag be flown in the windows of all military buildings. At the Capitanía Palace, the Navy's highest authority stepped on to the balcony to offer a chorus of 'Vivas' to the republic.
