Ball at the Capitanía Palace (1907)

Naval officers held full control over social life in Ferrol, pushing officers from the Army or the Navy Quartermaster into second place. The 'Capitanía soirees', held weekly from the 1890s onwards in the salons of the Capitanía Palace, were one of the main events in arranging marriages amongst the local middle and upper classes and naval personnel. Officer's wives also kept control of religious and charitable societies. However, as the Restoration progressed, local middle-class men who remained firmly in control of the town council resented being under military tutelage.
