Battalions Barracks, as seen from the Dockyards (c. 1920)

Throughout this period the Battalions Barracks acted as an effective watchdog over the naval installations and the city. It resisted the attempted overthrow during the Republican insurrection of 1872, and was a starting point of the military uprising in 1936. The 'Battalions Field', a large parade ground in front of the barracks, served both for military parades and as a playground for the neighbourhood of Esteiro. The Carnival was held there. In 1894, during a dispute between the Army and the city council regarding its ownership, the Battalions Field was occupied by military forces and incorporated as part of the barracks.
