New Navy Hospital (c. 1905)

The old Navy Hospital, which was totally obsolete, was destroyed by fire in 1891. In 1904 the new Navy Hospital was inaugurated, using the system designed by the French engineer Mollet, organized in independent pavilions that served as small isolated and specialized units. In this way it was possible to prevent contagious diseases spreading, to adapt the buildings to the irregular nature of the terrain, and to guarantee a maximum of sunlight. Originally, the new hospital was organized in four main wings: contagious diseases, non-contagious diseases, surgery, and venereal diseases (which were rife amongst sailors who frequented the prostitutes in Esteiro).
