Portrait of Pablo Iglesias, founder of the PSOE

It seems significant that in 1850 in the Ferrol neighbourhood of Esteiro Pablo Iglesias was born, the founder in 1879 of the PSOE, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, and of its counterpart the General Workers' Union (UGT) in 1888. The PSOE was the second socialist party at national level founded in Europe, with a programme based on the abolition of private property and social classes, and devoted to passing political power into the hands of the working class. As a child Pablo Iglesias moved to Madrid, from whence he went on to his political career. In 1910 he was the first MP for the PSOE, for a district in the capital, as part of an electoral coalition between republicans and socialists.
