Ferrol - Urban History
Consolidation
Fernando Street, Esteiro (early twentieth century)

The Esteiro district had begun to deteriorate when the shipyards' crisis caused unemployment amongst the 'maestranza'. During the first half of the nineteenth century the neighbourhood lost around one-third of its population, whilst its demographic weight in the city fell from 40 per cent to 30 per cent. The military church was moved nearer to the Capitanía Palace, as were the offices of the Navy Quartermaster, meaning that their staff left the neighbourhood, and so the naval officers no longer had any reason to frequent the area. Shops also closed down. Only a small barracks of the new 'Guardia Civil', the police force created in Spain in 1844 for keeping public order, was established there, in San Carlos Street.
