Ferrol - Urban History
Consolidation
Bus service linking Ferrol and the town of Viveiro (1908)

As Ferrol is situated midway up an estuary surrounded by a rugged coast, its connection with the city of Betanzos, and from there to the national road network, had to wait until the 1860s. Today these 65 kilometres of the old road network separating Ferrol and the provincial capital of A Coruña still take an hour and a half to travel by car. When the railway finally arrived in the city the automobile had already started to offer a flexible alternative for passenger transport, as was the case with the bus company 'El Noroeste' shown in the image. The car also modified the layout of the city: garages and petrol pumps appeared, together with the new task of controlling the traffic.
