'Villa Soledad', on the 'Castilla Road'

In the 1850s the 'Castilla Road', leading to Ferrol, was inaugurated, and a number of industries began to settle alongside it. It also led to the appearance of the villas built by Ferrol's middle class, who discovered that beyond the city walls there were healthier conditions and lower municipal taxes. At the start of the twentieth century the transport opportunities offered by the tramway helped to support this, with the chalets occupied for long periods throughout the year. 'Villa Soledad' was a particularly fine example: built in the 'regionalist' style, with a profusely decorated facade, the image shows the role it played as a centre for social life.
