Ferrol - Urban History
The city and port of A Coruņa (c. 1900)

The city of A Coruņa, capital of the province of the same name, took shape throughout the nineteenth century as the most significant urban centre in Galicia. Its administrative and service functions were important, and its port was a vital staging post for emigrants travelling to the Americas. At the start of the twentieth century it had a population of 44,000. The relative lack of industry, its modern, organized layout, and its beach had already given the city a degree of fame, making it a popular summer resort. Communications with Ferrol continued to be highly inadequate.
