Demonstration supporting the Ferrol Defence Council (1895)

When the Second Cuban Insurrection broke out in February 1895, the Ministry of War sent the heavy cruiser 'Infanta Teresa' to be armed at the Dockyards in Ferrol. In September, during manoeuvres in the estuary, the warship ran aground on a reef and the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy ordered that it be sent for repairs to Bilbao, where it had been built. This decision did not go down well in Ferrol, aware of the ability of the private shipyards in Bilbao to capture Navy contracts. The city council, led by its conservative mayor, resigned in protest and formed the 'Ferrol Defence Council'. The Commander-in-Chief had its members jailed, and declared a state of war. In the photograph we can see the demonstration supporting the 'Council' members, in front of the building where they were held prisoner.
