Ferrol - Urban History
Consolidation
The new Curuxeiras commercial port (c. 1950)

Ferrol did not have a commercial port, something that was a serious hurdle to the development of the city. The creation of the Harbour Advisory Board in 1910, when it became legally independent from A Coruņa, bears witness to the consolidation of a local middle class which was capable of developing new projects for encouraging economic diversification. In 1911 Ferrol's Chamber of Commerce was created, and in 1916 the Industrial and Commercial Circle. Five years later work started on the new commercial port, shown already completed in this image.
