Sardine sellers on the Curuxeiras Pier (c. 1870)

At the end of the nineteenth century in the neighbourhood of 'Old Ferrol' (to the west of La Magdalena) there lived a lively mixture of workers, market gardeners, sailors, and fishermen. On the old Curuxeiras Pier, where years later the commercial port would be built, the workers of the 'maestranza', who lived in the villages along the estuary, landed every day. It was also here that the fishing boats registered in the towns along the estuary unloaded their catch, which was then sold by peddlers.
