Royal Navy Hospital in Esteiro

In a naval base, the hospital was one of the main centres for experimenting with new disciplinary technologies, having to treat injuries caused in battle or by accidents at work, as well as epidemics and venereal diseases. Formerly a barracks, the Navy Hospital (1762) depended on military jurisdiction. It was funded by the collecting of 'scraps' - surplus pieces of wood - to the detriment of the workers' income. Whereas naval officers and their families were cared for in this hospital, the 'maestranza' could only be looked after in the event of a labour accident, whilst their families were not entitled to this hospital care. They would have to go to the Charity Hospital.
