San Carlos Street, in the Esteiro district (1867)

The military engineers created a grid design for Esteiro: six longitudinal streets cut across by cross-streets. It was more than a century before work on the city's installations got underway. Finally, in 1867 San Carlos Street was the first in the area to be paved and fitted with drains. Observe the tiny, impoverished houses with their wooden balconies. The barrels on the right probably indicate the presence of a tavern.
