Dock Dockyard, with the careening docks (1850)
The Dock Dockyard (1762-70) is situated between the Park Dockyard (left) and Esteiro Shipyards (right). Maintenance and repair work was carried out there, particularly the delicate operation of careening - cleaning seaweed and barnacles from the ships' hulls - work that was essential to keep the vessels seaworthy and prevent shipworm. The careening docks made it possible to avoid the dangerous operation of tilting ships on their sides.
