Mouth of the Ferrol estuary flanked by two castles (1999)

The deep-draught estuary of Ferrol was easy to defend since it had a narrow mouth surrounded by mountains. It was highly suitable as the location for Dockyards and a fleet conceived for defensive purposes. During the reign of Felipe II, the estuary of Ferrol had been used as an anchorage by the Armada, and fortifications had been built. Since the 1730s seven coastal batteries were installed as well as two castles (San Felipe and La Palma) situated either side of the narrowest point of the mouth, where ships had to enter in single file. The estuary was now impregnable.
