View of the city and port of A Coruņa (c. 1800)

The remote situation of the city of Ferrol set midway up the estuary surrounded by a rugged coast did not aid land communications or the diversification of the economy. The nearby city of A Coruņa absorbed the trading and administrative functions: it was headquarters of the 'Real Audiencia de Galicia' until the early nineteenth century, and later the capital of the new province of La Coruņa. Also, communications by land between the two cities were poor.
