Ferrol - Urban History

Ships built in Ferrol (1750-1860)

Although shipbuilding in Ferrol apparently reached its peak during the reign of Carlos III, practically all of the vessels constructed were small, either corvettes or frigates. The golden age of the large 'ships of the line' carrying 74 or even 112 guns coincided with the naval policy devised by the Marquis of Ensenada during the reign of Fernando VI (1746-59). After the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Trafalgar (1805) shipbuilding was paralysed, with unemployment, misery, and emigration sweeping Ferrol. The process of reconstruction would have to wait until the naval programmes of the 1850s, during the reign of Isabel II.
