Building of ships which carried more than 50 cannons (1715-59)

The naval policies of the reign of Felipe V still had their sights set on the Mediterranean, and were directed towards supporting territorial ambitions in Italy. Shipbuilding was concentrated in the shipyards along the Cantabrian coast (Pasajes and Santander), and in Havana. From 1746 onwards the new policy devised by the Marquis of Ensenada was aimed at building a fleet capable of competing with the British in the Atlantic. The main focus of shipbuilding was redirected to the main centres of the three naval departments in the Peninsula, particularly Ferrol.
