Franco's body lying in state, Madrid (1975)

In 1975, the death of Franco and the transition to democracy led to a new political situation. The political culture of the dictatorship had fallen into disrepute, and the social forces that had formerly supported it were now without organization, particularly after the unsuccessful military coup of February 1981. The introduction of a new political culture based on public liberties, universal suffrage, and free elections would result in the victory of the PSOE, Spain's socialist party, which would govern between 1982 and 1996. A reorganization of the State was developed, based on regional autonomy. At international level, Spain joined NATO in 1982, and the EEC in 1986.
