Ferrol - Urban History
Franco Period
Official photograph of Francisco Franco (c. 1945)

After the military uprising and the Civil War, the figure of the dictator was raised to the status of the unvanquished victor who brought with him peace and prosperity, and to whom all 'true and worthy Spaniards' owed both obedience and gratitude. In the cinemas, sessions would end with the image of Franco projected on the screen, with the audience having to give the stiff-arm salute while the national anthem played. This photo by Jalón Angel shows him in military uniform, with a good presence that he personally lacked. Until the dictator's death this photograph hung in many administrative offices, and continued to hang in a large number of military installations until many years later.
