View of the city of Cartagena (1786), by M. Cruz

The new Bourbon dynasty chose Cartagena as the capital for the Naval Department of 'Levante' (the Mediterranean Sea). Throughout the eighteenth century a dockyard and a naval base were built in the city on a model similar to that used in Ferrol. Its repercussions, although important, were not so decisive. Cartagena was already an important centre of population before 1726, with some 10,000 inhabitants, and harbour for the fleet of galleys operating in the Mediterranean. It was therefore decided to extend the city instead of building a new one. By the end of the century, its population had quadrupled.
