Portrait of Carlos III (1761)

The son of Felipe V and brother of Fernando VI, Carlos III succeeded Fernando on the throne. The reign of Carlos III (1759-88), a golden age of reforms of the Spanish Age of Enlightenment, coincided with a period of economic expansion connected with the reactivation of trade with America. The Third Family Pact with France (1761) led to a new offensive naval policy, marked by intervention in the Seven Years War and the US War of Independence. War expenses monopolized an increasing part of the budget, to the detriment of consolidation of the fleet and the network of naval installations established at the time of the Marquis of Ensenada. In the long run, British enmity would prove fatal.
