The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, Volume 122 Issue 05

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology (JLO) is a leading, monthly journal containing original scientific articles and clinical records in otology, rhinology, laryngology and related specialties. Founded in 1887, JLO is essential reading for ENT specialists and students. The journal has an international outlook with contributions from around the world, relevant to all specialists in this area regardless of the country in which they practice. JLO contains main articles (original, review and historical), case reports and short reports, book reviews, letters to the editor, calendar, operative surgical techniques and occasional supplements. It is fully illustrated and has become the definitive reference source in this fast moving subject area. Published monthly an annual subscription is excellent value for money and includes access to the JLO interactive website with a searchable abstract database, access to articles accepted prior to paper publication, videos of prestigious lectures and an archive of all past issues dating back to the inception of the journal as well as the current issue (www.jlo.co.uk).

It has long been observed that symptoms of laryngeal paralysis vary greatly, both between patients and over time. There have been various theories to explain these differences. This article reviews how these ideas have changed over time as research has produced new information. Currently, the most popular view is that the laryngeal nerve regenerates after injury, albeit incompletely and inconsistently, and that variations in symptoms and laryngeal posture can be accounted for by muscle activity.

Small, interfering ribonucleic acid segments have been shown to be effective tools for inhibiting the expression of a given gene within human cells. In the present study, we examined the effects of short hairpin ribonucleic acid expression vectors on the growth of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in nude mice, and we assessed potential side effects in these animals.

It is also useful for closing any inadvertent tears of the septal mucosa and providing additional support for the cartilage pieces retained in septoplasty. In addition, the suture can be placed through the middle turbinates, stabilising them during the healing process. Placing knots for interrupted sutures in the posterior and middle part of the nasal septum can be technically difficult. We describe a continuous suturing technique for approximating the mucosal flaps following septal surgery.
