We report direct numerical simulations of incompressible unsteady open-channel flow. Two mechanisms of turbulence production are considered: shear at the bottom and externally imposed stress at the free surface. We concentrate upon the effects of mutual interaction of small-amplitude gravity waves with in-depth turbulence and statistical properties of the near-free-surface region. Extensions of our approach can be used to study turbulent mixing in the upper ocean and wind–sea interaction, and to provide diagnostics of bulk turbulence.

The leading end of an infinitely long gas bubble which displaces a viscous surfactant solution in a capillary tube is studied. The surfactant is present at elevated concentration and has sorption controlled mass transfer. The displaced fluid wets the wall, forming a continuous liquid film between the bubble and the capillary wall. Both the thickness of this film and the additional pressure required to aspirate the bubble depend upon the Marangoni stresses caused by non-uniform surfactant adsorption along the interface. The equations governing this flow are solved at asymptotically small capillary number for the case where the balances of momentum and mass transfer are coupled to leading order. As the Marangoni effect is increased over several orders of magnitude, the additional pressure and the wetting-layer thickness increase above the stress-free interface values found by Bretherton (1961) and approach an upper bound of 42/3 times the Bretherton values. Accompanying changes in the surface tension, Marangoni stress and surface velocity profiles as this upper bound is approached are described. Finally, surface viscosities that are intrinsic to the interfacial region are incorporated in the analysis. When small departures from surface equilibrium states are considered, the terms representing surface viscous effects have the same functional form as the Marangoni stresses and result in thicker films and higher additional pressures.

The dispersion relation for internal waves travelling in the horizontal direction of a two-dimensional stratified shear flow is affected by the presence of topography, or upper and lower boundaries, which vary only in the horizontal direction normal to that of the flow. This is in accordance with Grimshaw's (1978) findings for long internal waves. Such topography, however, imposes boundary conditions which affect both the growth rates and orientation of the crests of unstable disturbances. Predictions are derived for the particular case of instability of a fluid with a thin interface separating two fluids of different densities in relative flow, which are confined in a tube with horizontal generators but which has upper and lower parallel plane boundaries inclined to the horizontal at an angle α. These predictions are compared with laboratory experiments. There is good qualitative agreement and some quantitative agreement, at least when the predicted angle, γ, between the crest lines of the disturbances and the cross-flow direction, is small. Relatively small disturbances, or billow, amplitudes are found along the centreline of the tube. At large γ, however, the disturbance crests becomes less well-ordered, with billows on one side of the tube centreline connecting with neighbouring pairs on the other, so evolving a zigzag pattern. The results have application to naturally occurring flows in estuaries and channels, and to the development of instability in the stratified atmosphere.

The impulsively starting motion of a circular cylinder submerged horizontally below a free surface is studied analytically using a small-time expansion. The series expansion is taken as far as necessary to include the leading gravitational effects for two cases: constant velocity and constant acceleration, both commencing from rest. The hydrodynamic force on the cylinder and the surface elevation are calculated and expressed in terms of bipolar coordinates. Comparisons are also made with earlier theoretical and experimental work. The theory is valid for arbitrary value of submergence depth to cylinder radius.

The impulsively starting motion of a small circular cylinder submerged horizontally below a free surface is studied analytically using a small-time expansion. The cylinder is considered small if the ratio between its radius and initial submergence depth is much smaller than one. The surface elevation is calculated up to third order. The hydrodynamic force on the small cylinder is also discussed. Certain inconsistencies in our small-cylinder approximation (assuming locally uniform flow around the cylinder) are found in the force prediction. The present work is an accompanying paper to Tyvand & Miloh (1995), where the same problem is studied for arbitrary radius versus submergence depth.

The unsteady laminar necklace vortex system formed at the junction of a rectangular bluff body and a flat plate was studied experimentally using hydrogen bubble flow visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The vortex system was found to exhibit unsteady behaviour similar to that described by other investigators for cylinder-flat plate junctures, and is characterized by the periodic formation of necklace vortices upstream of the body that subsequently break away and advect towards the block. Detailed analysis of PIV measurements on the plane of symmetry indicates that the dominant mechanism for vorticity balance in the vortex system is the cross-cancellation of the vorticity of the necklace vortex with vorticity of opposite sign generated by interaction of the necklace vortex with the approach surface to the body.

Measurements of wall pressure and streamwise velocity fluctuations in a turbulent boundary layer on a cylinder in an axial air flow (δ/a = 5.04, Reθ = 2870) have been used to investigate the turbulent flow structures in the cylindrical boundary layer that contribute to the fluctuating pressure at the wall in an effort to deduce the effect of transverse curvature on the structure of boundary layer turbulence. Wall pressure was measured at a single location with a subminiature electret condenser microphone, and the velocity was measured throughout a large volume of the boundary layer with a hotwire probe. Auto- and cross-spectral densities, cross-correlations, and conditional sampling of the pressure and streamwise velocity indicate that two primary groups of flow disturbances contribute to the fluctuating pressure at the wall: (i) low-frequency large-scale structures with dynamical significance across the entire boundary layer that are consistent with a pair of large-scale spanwise-oriented counter-rotating vortices and (ii) higher frequency small-scale disturbances concentrated close to the wall that are associated with the burst-sweep cycle and are responsible for the short-duration large-amplitude wall pressure fluctuations. A bidirectional relationship was found to exist between both positive and negative pressure peaks and the temporal derivative of u near the wall. Because the frequency of the large-scale disturbance observed across the boundary layer is consistent with the bursting frequency deduced from the average time between bursts, the burst-sweep cycle appears to be linked to the outer motion. A stretching of the large-scale structures very near the wall, as suggested by space-time correlation convection velocity results, may provide the coupling mechanism. Since the high-frequency disturbance observed near the wall is consistent with the characteristic frequency deduced from the average duration of bursting events, the bursting process provides the two characteristic time scales responsible for the bimodal distribution of energy near the wall. Because many of the observed structural features of the cylindrical boundary layer are similar to those observed in flat-plate turbulent boundary layers, transverse curvature appears to have little effect on the fundamental turbulent structure of the boundary layer for the moderate transverse curvature ratio used in this investigation. From differences that exist between the turbulence intensity, skewness, and spectra of the streamwise velocity, however, it appears that transverse curvature may enhance (i.e. energize) the large-scale motion owing to the reduced constraint imposed on the flow by the smaller cylindrical wall.

Some methods of formation of preforms for drawing of polarization-maintaining optical fibres are based on utilization of the surface tension of glass in the liquid state. Under the action of surface tension non-circular glass articles begin to flow, which results in formation of an anisotropic internal structure of the preforms. The hydrodynamic analysis of two such methods is given in the paper. Analytical solutions of the Stokes equations with linearized boundary conditions for the corresponding creeping surface-tension-driven flows of liquid glass are obtained. By means of these solutions a processing strategy may be predetermined with a view to a specific internal structure of the fibre, as well as to the required value of birefringence. The theoretical results are compared with experimental data and agreement is fairly good.

In this paper we report results of two-dimensional simulations of the motion of elliptic capsules carried by a Poiseuille flow in a channel. The numerical method allows computation of the capsule motion and the fluid flow around the capsule, and accurate evaluation of the lift force and torque. Results show that the motion of a capsule which is heavier than the carrying fluid may be decomposed into three stages: initial lift-off, transient oscillations and steady flying. The behaviour of the capsule during initial lift-off and steady flying is analysed by studying the pressure and shear stress distributions on the capsule. The dominant mechanism for the lift force and torque is lubrication or inertia or a combination of the two under different conditions. The lift-off velocity for the ellipse in two dimensions is compared with experimental values for cylindrical capsules in pipes. Finally, the mechanisms of lift for capsules are applied to flying core flows, and it is argued that inertial forces are responsible for levitating heavy crude oil cores lubricated by water in a horizontal pipeline.

In a previous paper, Germano, et al. (1991) proposed a method for computing coefficients of subgrid-scale eddy viscosity models as a function of space and time. This procedure has the distinct advantage of being self-calibrating and requires no a priori specification of model coefficients or the use of wall damping functions. However, the original formulation contained some mathematical inconsistencies that limited the utility of the model. In particular, the applicability of the model was restricted to flows that are statistically homogeneous in at least one direction. These inconsistencies and limitations are discussed and a new formulation that rectifies them is proposed. The new formulation leads to an integral equation whose solution yields the model coefficient as a function of position and time. The method can be applied to general inhomogeneous flows and does not suffer from the mathematical inconsistencies inherent in the previous formulation. The model has been tested in isotropic turbulence and in the flow over a backward-facing step.

A possible mechanism for the occurrence of the phenomenon of erratic drift of bubbles in liquids subjected to acoustic waves was proposed by Benjamin & Ellis (1990) who showed that nonlinear interactions between adjacent perturbation modes expressed in terms of spherical harmonics of any order may lead to the excitation of mode 1 which is equivalent to a displacement of the bubble centroid. We show that indeed such a mechanism can give rise to a chaotic process at least under the conditions experimentally investigated by Benjamin & Ellis (1990). In fact we examine the case in which the angular frequency ω of the incident wave is sufficiently close to both the natural frequency of mode n + 1 (ωn + 1) and twice the natural frequency of mode n (2ωn) thus exciting simultaneously a subharmonic mode n and a synchronous mode n + 1. The value of n is set equal to 3 in accordance with Benjamin & Ellis' (1990) observation. A classical multiple scale analysis allows us to follow the development of these perturbations in the weakly nonlinear regime to find an autonomous system of quadratically coupled nonlinear differential equations governing the evolution of the amplitudes of the perturbations on a slow time scale. As obtained by Gu & Sethna (1987) for the Faraday resonance problem, we find both regular and chaotic solutions of the above system. Chaos is found to develop for large enough values of the amplitude of the acoustic excitation within some region in the parameter space and is reached through a period-doubling sequence displaying the typical characteristics of Feigenbaum scenario.

A two-mode model for velocity and solute concentration in shallow-water flows is derived which allows for departures from the logarithmic velocity profile and from vertically well-mixed concentrations. The modelling is tested against exact results for a buoyancy-driven transverse flow and for a modified logarithmic velocity profile.

The turbulent structure in plane Couette flow at low Reynolds numbers is studied using data obtained both from numerical simulation and physical experiments. It is shown that the near-wall turbulence structure is quite similar to what has earlier been found in plane Poiseuille flow; however, there are also some large differences especially regarding Reynolds stress production. The commonly held view that the maximum in Reynolds stress close to the wall in Poiseuille and boundary layer flows is due to the turbulence-generating events must be modified as plane Couette flow does not exhibit such a maximum, although the near-wall coherent structures are quite similar. For two-dimensional mean flow, turbulence production occurs only for the streamwise fluctuations, and the present study shows the importance of the pressure—strain redistribution in connection with the near-wall coherent events.

By extending the methods of Part 1, the general problem of steady cylindrical supersonic free jet flow is treated in a similar manner to the flow in quasi-cylindrical ducts. It is shown that the presence of a finite pressure jump at the nozzle lip gives rise to a periodic singularity pattern in the flow field. Basic examples of free jet flows are discussed, and for the case of a nearly ideally expanded axisymmetric jet, theoretical Mach—Zehnder interferograms are calculated by analytical integration of the density field. Excellent agreement with experiment proves the validity of linear theory even close to the singularities and far downstream of the nozzle orifice. Furthermore, it is shown that Pack's formula for the wavelength of the shock cell structure is inconsistent; the correct formula is derived and excellent agreement with Emden's empirical fit is found.

This paper describes the solution of Long's problem for steady rotationally symmetric swirling jets in a uniform viscous fluid. Long found these vortices in 1958 by assuming a similarity form of solution, and in 1961 solved the consequent problem in the boundary-layer limit, finding dual solutions. The overall pattern of the solutions to the problem for general values of the Reynolds number is described. The linear spatial stability of the flows to small steady disturbances is analysed and a few results presented. In particular, details of the solutions and their stability are given asymptotically for small and large values of the Reynolds number. The asymptotic results for the basic flow are linked by direct numerical integration of the flow at several finite positive values of the Reynolds number.

A numerical study is presented of the motion of two-dimensional, doubly periodic, dilute and concentrated emulsions of liquid drops with constant surface tension, subject to a simple shear flow. The numerical method is based on a boundary integral formulation that employs a Green's function for doubly periodic Stokes flow, computed using the Ewald summation method. Under the assumption that the viscosity of the drops is equal to that of the ambient fluid, the motion is examined in a broad range of capillary numbers, volume fractions, and initial geometrical configurations. The latter include square and hexagonal lattices of circular and closely packed hexagonal drops with rounded corners. Based on the nature of the asymptotic motion at large times, a phase diagram is constructed separating regions where periodic motion is established, or the emulsion is destabilized due to continued elongation or coalescence of intercepting drops. Comparisons with previous computations for bounded systems illustrate the significance of the walls on the evolution and rheological properties of an emulsion. It is shown that the shearing flow is able to stabilize a concentrated emulsion against the tendency of the drops to become circular and coalesce, thereby allowing for periodic evolution even when the volume fraction of the suspended phase might be close to that for dry foam. This suggests that the imposed shearing flow plays a role similar to that of the disjoining pressure for stationary foam. At high volume fractions, the geometry of the microstructure and flow at the Plateau borders and within the thin films separating adjacent drops are illustrated and discussed with reference to the predictions of the quasi-steady theory of foam. Although the accuracy of certain fundamental assumptions underlying the quasi-steady theory is not confirmed by the numerical results, we find qualitative agreement regarding the basic geometrical features of the evolving microstructure and effective rheological properties of the emulsion.
