What do you mean when you talk about 'Organisational users', 'Individual users' and 'Society members'?

Answer

Organisational users

Organisational users are those people who access the site via their library-held subscription. There is no need for you to deal with subscription numbers and all queries relating to access should be directed to your library's Account Administrator (usually the serials librarian, or the electronic resources manager). You can access tables of contents and article abstracts, perform searches, receive alerts and access the full text of articles for those journals to which your organisation holds an active subscription.

Individual users

Individual users are those people who have a personal online subscription to one or more journals. You need to register to receive full-text access. Individuals who have personal online subscriptions and are also affiliated to an organisation that has its own online subscriptions will have access rights to both their own and their organisation's subscriptions.

Society members

Society members are those members of participating societies who, via their society, receive the rights to full-text access for a particular journal. To gain access, you must register on the site and enter your Society ID and Society Subscription Number which will be provided by your society. Society members who have access to society journals and are also affiliated to an organisation that has its own online subscriptions will have access rights to both the society journals and their organisation's subscriptions (as well as to any individual subscriptions they may have).

Question

We had activated subscriptions on the previous version of Cambridge Journals Online. Will these be automatically transferred to the new site?

Answer

Yes. All activated subscriptions will be carried over from the previous version of Cambridge Journals Online, so you do not need to take any further action. Please do not attempt to re-activate them on the new site. Only subscriptions that have not been activated before the re-launch, or new subscriptions, need to be activated.

Click the 'Forgot your password?' link in the 'Welcome' panel. This will take you to the Forgotten Password page where you can arrange either to have your password reminder or a temporary password emailed to you. Note: you must supply your correct email address for us to be able to contact you.

What is the role of the Account Administrator?

Answer

The Account Administrator is the person solely responsible for purchasing organisational subscriptions through Cambridge Journals Online and for managing online access. It is their responsibility to activate online access, where necessary, and to configure the IP-based access rights for the organisation's subscriptions.

Who can be the Account Administrator?

Answer

Your organisation can appoint any registered user to be the Account Administrator. Usually, it is a member of the library staff. They will need to register with their own account username and password.

What are valid IP formats?

Answer

IP addresses are made up of four numeric components separated by a full stop (period). Each numeric component ranges from 0 to 255. You can express an IP range by using a hyphen (-) and you can use a wildcard within a range by using an asterisk (*)

Examples of valid IP address formats (note the numbers are used as examples only):
  • 121.18.19.20 = a single IP address
  • 121.18.19.* = all IP addresses beginning 121.18.19
  • 121.18.19.0-255 = a range of IP addresses from 121.18.19.0 to 121.18.19.255 inclusive (ie the same as the example above)
  • 121.18.* = all IP addresses beginning 121.18
  • 121.18.0-255. = all IP addresses in the range 121.18.0-255 (ie all addresses beginning 121.18)
  • 121.18.0-255.0-255 = all IP addresses beginning 121.18
  • 121.* = all IP addresses beginning 121
  • 121.0-255.0-255.0-255 = all IP addresses beginning 121

    What should I do after registration?

    Answer

    Once you have registered as the Account Administrator, you need to activate any new subscriptions to ensure your organisation has access to the full text of articles.

    Please note, however, that subscriptions that had already been activated in the previous version of Cambridge Journals Online will automatically be carried over to the new site and do not need any further action. Please do not attempt to activate these. Only subscriber numbers that have not been activated before, or any new subscriber numbers, need any action taken.

    If you are receiving print versions of the journal, the subscriber number appears on the mailing sheet you get in the journal package. If your journal has been despatched from the UK, you will find the number just above your address. If your journal has been despatched from North America, you will find the number just below the barcode and just after the customer number. If you do not have any record of the number and you purchased the subscription via an agent, please contact the agent in the first instance.     How do I configure IP access for my organisation?

    Answer

    To give members of your organisation access to the journals you have subscribed to, you need to supply the IP addresses that identify the eligible computers on your network.

    Click 'Configure IP address' in the 'Account Administrator' panel.

    How do I add or delete IP addresses?

    Answer

    Go to 'Configure IP address' in the Account Administrator menu. To add a single IP address or range enter it into the first text box. To add multiple IPs/ranges you can copy and paste comma-delimited IPs/ranges into the larger text box. If you want to exclude IP addresses that are part of a range, enter the IPs you wish to exclude in the first textbox then check the 'Exclude' box next to it. To delete an existing IP address or range, check the 'Delete' box next to it.

    Are we allowed to have more than one Account Administrator for our organisation?

    Answer

    No, this version of Cambridge Journals Online only allows one Account Administrator for each organisation.

    I have activated the subscriber number/s, but there are still some of our subscriptions missing. Why is this?

    Answer

    Organisations can have more than one subscriber number. The subscriptions to your missing journals may be held under a different subscriber number. Please contact your agent or Customer Services for further help.

    The subscriber number/s has been activated, yet we are still being denied access to the full text of articles. Why?

    Question

    Do I need to go through the activation process for every journal that we have subscribed to?

    Answer

    No, you only need to activate a subscriber number once in order for online access to be granted for all of the journals held against it. Once a subscriber number has been activated you will not need to enter it again. However, you will need to activate each subscriber number you have.

    What happens if we don't renew a journal subscription. Will we lose access completely?

    Answer

    You will still be able to access the back issues you previously purchased, but you will not be able to access any new content.

    Question

    I have activated our subscriptions but some of our users still cannot gain access. Why?

    Answer

    Make sure that all your IPs are correctly configured. Click 'Configure IP address' in the 'Account Administrator' panel. This will take you to the 'Configure IP address' page where you can check that all the IPs for your organisation have been entered correctly.

    Does Cambridge Journals Online allow institutional subscribers to provide material from the site to other libraries via interlibrary loan?

    Answer

    Institutional subscribers may supply another library within the same country with a part of the Material (by post, fax or secure electronic transmission, whereby the electronic file is deleted immediately after printing) for that other library to make a single paper copy of and to further provide to an Authorized User of the said other library for the purposes of research or private study but not for commercial use.

    Our organisation has a number of distance learners. How do they get access to our subscriptions?

    Answer

    Please ask your users to dial in to your library for access as they would normally do. As long as the user accesses Cambridge Journals Online from an IP address within your organisation's configured IP ranges, they will be able to receive organisational access. (Remember to abide by the Terms of Use when granting access to organisational users.)

    Alternatively, Account Administrators can set up designated users to have remote access. Use the 'Remote User Access' page in the Account Administrator's menu.

    Organisations that have registered their Athens ID with Cambridge Journals Online can give their library users a username and password that will allow them to access journal subscriptions remotely via Athens.

    How is CABI content being made available on CJO?

    Answer

    All 2007 content will be available on CJO as it is published. 2006 and prior content will be loaded onto CJO by the beginning of February 2007; access from the current hosting platform, Ingenta, will remain until end March 2007.

    I am a subscriber to CABI journals. How will the switch of content affect my access?

    Answer

    Subscribers who have not yet renewed for 2007 will still be able to access their previous years’ content via CJO. CJO operates a grace period until 31 March so subscribers will also be able to access any 2007 issues up until that date, even if they have not yet renewed. Any subscribers having difficulties should contact cjosupport@cambridge.org with details.

    I am an existing Cambridge University Press customer. How will I access CABI content?

    Answer

    Subscribers who are already customers of Cambridge University Press will have had access to the above titles added seamlessly to their existing accounts; so no further action will be necessary - unless you know that CABI recorded your subscriber details in a different way to those recorded by CUP, in which case you should contact cjosupport@cambridge.org

    What is the role of a Society Administrator?

    Answer

    If a society wants to make the content of its journal available to its society members through Cambridge Journals Online, it will need to appoint a Society Admininstrator to manage online access.

    As the Society Administrator you will be a given a Society ID number by Customer Services. You will also need to provide a list of membership numbers so that we can identify your members for the purposes of access control. You can upload the membership numbers to Cambridge Journals Online using the 'Upload membership numbers' page.

    You will then need to tell each of your members the Society ID and their membership number, then, as long as they are registered with Cambridge Journals Online, they will be able to access the full text of the society's journal(s).

    My organisation subscribes to a number of journals. How do I see the journal articles?

    Answer

    If your organisation has purchased the subscription to a specific journal, you can get access to its articles via its tables of contents. Go to the journal's homepage (by using one of the Browse options), then by clicking on 'Available volumes' you will be able to drill down until you get to the issue you are looking for. Clicking on the issue will bring up the table of contents. Below each article you should see links to the PDF and, where available, the full-text HTML.

    If you experience any difficulties, contact your Account Administrator. They will usually be a serials librarian, an electronic resource manager, or hold a position similar to this.

    I am accessing Cambridge Journals Online from a certain organisation but the site recognises me as belonging to another organisation. Why does this happen?

    Answer

    There could be confusion regarding the IP address that you are accessing from. Please visit the Diagnostics page by clicking the 'Help' link on the top navigation bar, then clicking 'Diagnostics'. Go to the 'Problem details' section at the bottom of the page and enter your email address, the details of the problem you are experiencing and choose your location from the drop-down menu. Click 'Email' and your regional Customer Services department will respond to your query as soon as possible.

    Can I access Cambridge Journals Online while I'm travelling or away from my organisation?

    Answer

    If it is necessary to access the site, please contact your Account Administrator about dialing in to your organisation's network or about becoming a remote user. Alternatively, you will be able to access the site if you have an Athens username and password and your organisation has registered with Cambridge Journals Online.

    I have just purchased an individual subscription to an online journal. How do I access the articles to that journal?

    Answer

    If you have bought your individual subscription online, you will gain immediate access to its articles. Go to a table of contents for that journal and you will be able to access all the articles as PDFs and, increasingly, in HTML.

    If you have purchased the subscription in any other way, (via an agent, for example, or by mailing, faxing or phoning Cambridge Journals) you will need to activate your subscription. Customer Services will email you your subscriber number if they have your email address. Otherwise they will mail it to you. Once you have the subscriber number, click 'Activate subscriptions' in the 'My Cambridge Journals Online' panel. This page allows you to activate the subscription using the subscriber number sent to you.

    How do I activate an "offer code"?

    Answer

    If you a new user, you can activate an offer code by clicking Register Now, then filling out the form. Enter the offer code in the Offer Code field, then click Submit to register and activate the code, all at once.

    If you already have a Cambridge Journals Online username, log in. Once you're logged in, look for the "Change Registration Details" link, under the "My Cambridge Journals Online" heading. Enter the offer code in the Offer Code field, then click Submit to activate it.

    If you have more than one code to activate, just click the "Change Registration Details" link after you've activated your first code, then enter your next offer code in the Offer Code field and click Submit to activate it. You can repeat this process for as many offer codes as you need to activate.

    How do I unsubscribe from Cambridge's content alerts?

    Answer

    If you want to stop receiving content alerts for a particular Cambridge journal, first log in to Cambridge Journals Online. Then click on 'My content alerts' in the 'My Cambridge Journals Online' menu at the bottom left-hand side of the page. Scroll down to find the journal for which you no longer wish to receive alerts and 'untick' the box(es) next to them.

    Alternatively, you can go to 'My content alerts' and click the radio button: 'Do not send me an email alert when new issues are published online'. This is particularly useful if you subscribe to content alerts for a number of journals and wish to stop receiving all of them.

    I receive a free subscription to a journal as part of my society membership. Do I automatically have full-text access to this journal?

    No. You will only receive full-text access if your society has arranged this with Cambridge Journals Online. If you have any queries please contact your society.

    What is a society subscription number? How do I activate it?

    This is for members of a society only. If a society you belong to has made arrangements for its members to have access to its journal(s) on Cambridge Journals Online, you will need a society subscription number to 'activate your subscription' (ie to get access to the full-text of the journal(s) concerned). To activate your society subscription, click the 'Activate society subscriptions' link under the "My Cambridge Journals Online" panel. Input the Society ID and Society Subscription Number and click the 'Activate' button. You will now have access to your society's journals.

Question

I want to register for the Southern Political Science Association's Annual Conference. How do I do so?

Answer

Go to the SPSA Membership Services page. To do this, you can either click 'For societies' then click the SPSA logo at the bottom of the page, or go to the Journal of Politics homepage and click the logo there. Or click here.

If you are an SPSA member, or would like to become one, click the Conference Registration + SPSA Membership link. Click the Non-membership Conference Registration link to register as a non-member.

Proceed through the shopping and checkout process to register for the conference and/or purchase a membership. You can also purchase admission to the conference's luncheon/keynote address and, if you wish to, you can contribute to the society's endowment funds.

Once you have finished the checkout process, the Manage Account feature allows you to check the status of your registration and membership and to cancel any of your previous purchases.

Answer

Go to the journal's homepage and on the right-hand side you will see a link to 'Instructions for Contributors'. This will give you all the information you need about who to contact and how to prepare your article for that particular journal.

How do I create a link directly to my article either from my own website or my department's website?

Answer

To create a deep link to your article, you first need to go to the table of contents your article appears in on Cambridge Journals Online. Underneath the article title you will see its DOI. You need the number to the right of the back slash, including the S. For example, if the DOI of your article is 10.1017/S0142716405050095, you would use S0142716405050095.

To create a link to your article, cut and paste the number after: www.journals.cambridge.org/article_

So, for the DOI above, that would be www.journals.cambridge.org/article_S0142716405050095

To create a link to the abstract of your article, paste the number after: www.journals.cambridge.org/abstract_

Note: if you link directly to your article and the person following the link does not have access to the full text of the article they will see a message which explains why they are denied access. If you link to the abstract, users with full-text access will be able to click through to the PDF (or HTML where available) using the links at the top right of the abstract.

How do I purchase a subscription (individual or organisational) online?

Answer

In order to purchase a subscription online you need to register with us. Please log in if you have already registered, or visit the Registration page if not. Individual subscriptions can be purchased by any registered user. Only the designated Account Administrator can purchase a subscription on behalf of an organisation.

Go to the homepage of the journal you are interested in and choose the type of subscription you would like to buy. Click the 'Subscribe' link and you will be taken to the Shopping Basket. Depending on the type of subscription you chose, it will appear in either the Individual or Organisational Shopping Basket. Once you are satisfied with the items in your shopping basket click 'Next'. Note: checking out of individual and organisational shopping baskets are two separate processes.

Individual shopping basket check-out

You will first be asked to confirm your name and shipping address. When you are ready, click 'Next'. The next page will display the exact tax payable on your print and online items. The total checkout amount will also be displayed. When you are happy to proceed, click 'Next'. You will now be asked to enter your credit card details. Depending on your country of origin, your credit cards will processed by WorldPay (United Kingdom) or VeriSign (United States). Note: We do not store any of your credit card information and only pass it to our payment facility partners.

Once your payment has been confirmed, an online receipt will be displayed. You can print this for your own records. The online items you have purchased will be displayed below with links back to their full-text content. You can view all your subscriptions by clicking the 'Subscribed to' link in the 'Browse Journals' panel.

Organisational shopping basket check-out

Depending on who you are, you may see a number of different screens at check-out.

If you are a registered user but the organisation you belong to does not have a Cambridge Journals Online account, you will be asked to set up a new account. After filling in the organisation details, click 'Next'. You will then proceed with the normal check-out from confirming name and address through to confirmed payment details. (Note: you will now be the Account Administrator for the organisation)

If you are a registered user belonging to an organisation that has a Cambridge Journals Online account (and you are not the Account Administrator), you will be asked to email the Account Administrator to purchase the organisational subscription for you. How do I purchase a pay-per-view article online?

In order to purchase a pay-per-view online you need to register with us. Please log in if you have already registered, or visit the Registration page if not. Pay-per-view articles can be purchased by any registered user.

After accessing a specific table of contents, choose a pay-per-view article that you would like to purchase. Click 'Add to Basket' under the article entry and you will be taken to the Shopping Basket. You can also add more than one article at a time to your basket by checking the articles' checkboxes in the 'Add to basket' column. After checking all articles that you would like to purchase, click the 'Add to basket' button at the bottom of the page and you will be taken to the Shopping Basket.

All pay-per-view article items will appear in your 'Individual' Shopping Basket. Once you are happy with the items in your shopping basket, click 'Next'. You will first be asked to confirm your name and shipping address. The next page will display the exact tax payable, depending on the country you are based in. The total checkout amount will also be displayed. When you are happy to proceed, click 'Next'. You will now be asked to enter your credit card details. Depending on your country of origin, your credit cards will processed by WorldPay (United Kingdom) or VeriSign (United States). Note: We do not store any of your credit card information and only pass it to our payment facility partners.

Once your payment has been confirmed, an online receipt will be displayed. You can print this for your own records. I have a paid subscription but I cannot see the full text of articles. Why?

For organisational users, online access must be activated by the Account Administrator who will enter the relevant subscriber number. Please ensure that they have activated the subscriber number. Another possible reason for not receiving full-text access may be that your Account Administrator needs to include your IP address in their list of permitted IP addresses. Check with them that they have included your IP address.

In the case of individual subscribers and members of participating societies, you may need to activate your subscriber number yourself. Use the 'Activate subscriptons' or 'Activate society subscriptions' link in the 'My Cambridge Journals Online' panel.

How do I become an Account Administrator?

You need to register with Cambridge Journals Online. On the registration page, enter the name of your organisation in the appropriate input field. Then click the "I want to be the Account Administrator for my organisation" checkbox before going on to complete the rest of the form.

Here are some tips that may help with printing PDFs:

PDF files are very large and can take some time to download. The speed can depend on several factors - the bandwith of your network connection, the specifications of your computer and the amount of traffic on the internet. You must wait for the entire document to download before trying to print.

It may help to close other applications to free up memory space before trying to download a large PDF. You can also try printing one page at a time. Or try to save the file to disk rather than printing it immediately. Once you click a PDF link from the site, a download dialog box will appear. You have the option to download the PDF to your computer or open it with an Acrobat Reader in the internet browser.

How are special characters displayed in HTML?

Answer

Our HTML content uses the Unicode Character Set to identify characters which are not part of the standard Latin character sets/symbols. We do this to extend the range of characters and symbols that can be displayed using an Internet Browser such as Explorer or Firefox. Many of our journals contain highly specialised content requiring character sets/symbols that are specifically for and unique to a subject area. However Internet Browsers and available fonts place limitations on the number of specialist characters that can be displayed correctly.

Support for Unicode depends on the type and version of the browser being used and the fonts installed on an individuals machine. These are configuration issues over which we have no control, so consequently the same article may display correctly for someone with a specialist font or latest browser but incorrectly for someone with a default font or older browser. In order to minimise this discrepancy we have defined a set of Unicode characters that display correctly in the browsers that CJO supports using the default font Arial (on a PC) and Ventura (on Mac), characters that are not in this set are replaced by images of the character or symbol. If this was not done, unsupported characters would display as an empty rectangle, not display at all or display the default behaviour for the browser being used. This has the advantage of enabling users to display the maximum number of unsupported characters. However, it also means that the level is set to a low threshold so users with specialist fonts that could view the special characters will still see the images rather than the Unicode character. There can also be mismatches in the style of the character if it should appear inside an word that is italic or bold. As browsers increase their support for Unicode we will be able to reduce the use of images in the HTML and we hope that this approach will enable you to get the most out of the HTML content.
