The parable of the Good Samaritan presents Jesus' distinctive interpretation of the Torah in parabolic form. When it confronts a priest with a dead or dying man, it sets up an unusual, halakhically debatable situation, since the commandment that a priest avoid contracting corpse-impurity conflicts with the commandment to love the neighbour. One commandment must take precedence. Jesus' Jewish contemporaries would have disagreed as to how the priest should behave, but the general halakhic principle which the parable suggests – that the love commandment should always override others in cases of conflict – seems to be unparalleled.

Zudem zeigen einige Partien starke Affinitäten mit der erzählerischen und theologischen Konzeption des Johannesevangeliums, so daß sich eine Entwicklung der Heilungs-geschichte in drei Phasen differenzieren läßt.

Many scholars employ a different kind of criterion of coherence from the standard, i.e., the criterion that Jesus’ authentic sayings hold together in a coherent whole; yet Jesus scholars differ regarding the nature of this coherence. When we then understand that Jesus was a charismatic leader of a new religious movement, and when we examine how such persons in general behave, we see the importance of randomness for charismatic leadership, and we understand that we cannot expect systematic coherence among the sayings of Jesus. Jesus may have said things that appear contradictory, but they will have enhanced his charismatic authority.

Weit enfernt davon, einen klaren und eindeutigen Sinn der biblischen Texte zu liefern, hat sich die neuzeitliche Exegese als eine wichtige Wegbereiterin des modernen Pluralismus erwiesen. Die historische Kritik beschränkt sich in ihren Textrekonstruktionen konsequent auf die Vergangenheit und überlässt es dadurch den Leser/innen, die für sie heute gültige Bedeutung der Texte selbst zu bestimmen. Durch die Wendung zur Sprache haben wir gelernt, Texte als sprachliche Konstruktionen von Wirklichkeit zu sehen, deren Sinn von den jeweiligen Leser/innen in höhem Masse mit konstituiert wird. Das Studium der Wirkungsgeschichte macht heutigen Leser/innen die Geprägtheit und zugleich die Partikularität ihrer eigenen Lesungen der Texte deutlich. Die heutige Exegese muss den von ihr selbst mitgeprägten Pluralismus bejahen und versuchen, die Sache ihrer Texte auf dem ‘Marktplatz’ der Weltanschauungen, Meinungen und Deutungen in öffentlichem, rationalem und offenem Diskurs zu vertreten und so auf die Fremdheit der Geschichte Jesu und den von den biblischen Texten bezeugten Gott hinzuweisen.

Under the direction of Professor Kurt Aland, the Institute of NT Textual Research developed a system for classifying Greek manuscripts without having to do a full collation.On the basis of 98 selected test passages, all extant manuscripts for the Catholic Epistles were classified. In order to determine the accuracy of the test passages for classification purposes, 112 fully collated manuscripts of 1 John from the files of Andrews University were used to compare classifications based on test passages and full collations. Classifications based on full collations of 1 John confirmed 83 per cent. of the Institute's classifications for the Catholic Epistles.

Responding to assertions and evidence in a 1997 New Testament Studies article by R. F. Shedinger (and to George Howard, the editor of the text in question), this article demonstrates with fourteen textual examples and circumstantial evidence (Isaac Velasquez's Arabic gospel translation) that the Hebrew Matthew contained in Shem-Tob's Even Bohan (1) is part of the western harmonized gospel tradition, (2) is especially, often uniquely, related to the traditions which lie behind the Middle Dutch Liège Harmony, and (3) is translated from a medieval Latin Vorlage. In no way is it (pace Shedinger) related to 45 or (pace Howard) pre-Johannine.

Considérées du point de vue de leur signification, les béatitudes, telles qu'elles se présentent dans le texte final de Mt 5.3–12, ne font pas que se suivre selon un ordre plus ou moins arbitraire. Une progression se laisse en effet observer de l'une à l'autre au niveau de la pensée, en particulier entre les trois béatitudes qui concernent la relation à Dieu (les pauvres en esprit, les affamés et assoiffés de justice, les purs de cœur). Des niveaux croissants de profondeur se laissent également observer entre les trois béatitudes qui situent le bonheur en relation avec les autres (les doux, les miséricordieux et ceux qui font la paix). L'article s'attarde davantage à deux béatitudes (les doux et les ‘faiseurs de paix’) dont la signification est davantage discutée et s'efforce de montrer que la première, considérée le plus souvent comme une simple variante de la béatitude des pauvres en esprit, est à comprendre en relation avec le prochain plutôt qu'en relation avec Dieu.

In this study Golgotha is defined as the area of a disused quarry, west of first-century Jerusalem. The site of the crucifixion of Jesus and the. site of his entombment are distinguished as separate localities within this region. It is proposed that while Jesus was executed close to Gennath Gate and two main roads, he was buried some 200 m. further north in a more isolated area. Addressing archaeological and historical evidence, the author reconsiders her previous scepticism regarding the traditional tomb of Jesus, and proposes instead that it may well be authentic, though she renews her argument for the localisation of the crucifixion further south.

Die eigentümliche Unterscheidung von Jesus und Menschensohn in Lk 12.8 (und Mk 8.38 diff. Mt 10.32f.) spielt nicht nur eine entscheidende Rolle in der Frage nach der Authentizität des Doppelspruchs, sondern bietet vielen auch den entscheidenden Schlüssel zum Selbstverständnis Jesu. Zu fragen ist jedoch, ob der Menschensohn überhaupt ursprünglich in dem Logion stand. Eine Überprüfung der bisherigen Diskussion zeigt, daβ sich weder die Ursprünglichkeit des Menschensohnes in Lk 12.8 (I) noch seine Streichung durch Mt 10.32 (III) überzeugend begründen läβt. Die Korrespondenz von Lk 12.8 mit Apg 7.55f. spricht dafur, daβ erst Lukas die in der Überlieferung singuläre Vorstellung vom Menschensohn als Advokat seiner Märtyrer entwickelt (II). Auch in Mk 8.38 ist nicht auszuschlieβen, daβ erst der markinische Redaktor den Menschensohn unter dem Einfluβ von Mk 13.26 einführt (IV). Es ist daher damit zu rechnen, daβ in dem Spruch ursprünglich entweder wie bei Mt ein ‘Ich’ oder analog zu dem Passiv in Lk 12.9 eine allgemeine Aussage ‘man wird bekennen’ stand (V). In dieser Gestalt könnte der Spruch auf den historischen Jesus zurückgehen. Die in der urchristlichen Überlieferung mit der Vorstellung von Jesus als dem endzeitlichen Richter konkurrierende Vorstellung vom Fürsprecher und Parakleten erwiese sich dann als Relikt authentischer Jesustradition (VI).

Matthew and Luke sometimes write versions of Marcan pericopae in which they make initial changes, only to lapse into the thought or wording of the original. Clear examples are Matt 14.1–12 ∥Mark 6.14–29 (Death of John); Matt 8.1–4 ∥ Mark 1.40–5 (Leper); Matt 12.46–50 ∥ Mark 3.31–5 (Mother and Brothers); Luke 8.4–15 ∥ Mark 4.1–20 (Sower); Luke 5.17–26 ∥ Mark 2.1–12 (Paralytic) and Luke 9.10–17 ∥ Mark 6.30–44 (Five Thousand), all of which make good sense on the theory of Marcan Priority. ‘Fatigue’ may also suggest a solution to the problem of double tradition material: Luke 9.1–6 (cf. Matt 10.5–15, Mission Charge) and Luke 19.11–27 ∥ Matt 25.14–30 (Talents) both make good sense on the theory of Luke’s use of Matthew.

The phrase ‘sons and daughters’ in 2 Cor 6.18 provides the only instance of θυγάτηρ in all of the letters ascribed to Paul. It is argued that (1) the OT allusions in vv. 16–18 are from similar contexts of warning against combining the worship and service of God with that given to other gods, with (2) v. 18 being an echo of Deut 32.19, another instance of Paul's use of Deut 32. (3) Another influence is the OT practice, unlike that of the NT, of predominantly using both ‘sons’ and ‘daughters’ in parenting and family contexts.

This article combines historical, literary, theological, and feminist criticism to inquire into the identity of the Beloved Disciple (BD) in the Fourth Gospel attempting to mediate between the theory of the BD as pure literary construct and the BD as a single historical individual. It proposes that the BD is a textual paradigm of ideal discipleship which is realized diversely in several characters in the text. This has ramifications for the textual identity of the evangelist and of the foundational Easter witness of the Johannine community. It suggests that women were more significant in leadership of the Johannine community than has been recognised in the past.

Der siebte matthäische Weheruf gegen ‘Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer’ (Mt 23.32–6), der zu Jesu Wehklage über Jerusalem (23.37–9), seinem Auszug aus dem Tempel (24.1) und der Ankündigung der Tempelzerstörung (24.2) überleitet, vermittelt eine polemisch geprägte christliche Auβenansicht der Ereignisse des Jahres 70 n.Chr. Vom Blickwinkel der Rabbinen her, die dieselben Ereignisse auf derselben biblischen Grundlage reflektieren, wird die Besonderheit der matthäischen Deutung ebenso sichtbar wie ihre Verwurzelung in jüdisch-schriftgelehrtem Denken. Insbesondere die rabbinische Aggada vom Blut des Sacharja läβt erkennen, daβ sich die Mt-Redaktion einer beiden Parteien gemeinsamen ‘Familiensprache’ bedient, die in der Forschung noch keineswegs hinreichend entschlüsselt ist.

This article, a rejoinder to a recent article in this journal by A. B. Luter and M. Lee, responds to their presentation of a macro-chiastic analysis of Philippians by examining two issues. The first is the use of chiasm in recent New Testament study, where it is shown that there is a lack of methodological rigour in explication of the concept. The second scrutinizes analyses of Philippians using chiasm with regard to three areas: macro-chiasm as a method, the nature and quality of macro-chiastic claims regarding the structure of Philippians, and its possible use in determining the literary integrity of Philippians.

Stimulated by the work of D. Boyarin, the topic of circumcision is examined in Philo (Spec. Leg. 1.1–11; Migr. Abr. 89–93) and Paul (Rom 2.25–9). Philo limits his allegorizing tendencies in view of the conservative instincts of the Jewish community. Paul is far more radical in relation to Jewish opinion: Rom 2.29 indicates his willingness to dispense with human praise in such matters. On the other hand, his intellectual framework is far less acculturated than that of Philo; pace Boyarin, none of the contrasts in Rom 2.28–9 reflect Hellenizing influence. Paul's hermeneutical revolution matched no contemporary form of Judaism.

This paper explores the boundaries between fact and fiction in ancient literature. The historians effectively created the concept of ‘fiction’ in Greek literature by defining what could be incontrovertibly established as ‘fact’ by accepted rationalistic criteria. Anything beyond these limits (tales involving distant places, or the distant past, or divine intervention) was widely perceived as belonging to the realm of ‘fiction’. To readers from this background, Acts would fall uncomfortably on the boundary: much of the narrative would sound like fiction, but there is a disturbing undercurrent which suggests that it might after all be intended as fact.

In Offb 11.4 werden die beiden ‘apokalyptischen Zeugen' mit den zwei Ölbäumen gleichgesetzt, die laut Sach 4.11–14 rechts und links vor dem ‘Herrn der Erde’ stehen. In auffallender Parallelität fordern die Söhne Zebedäi die Plätze zur Rechten und zur Linken des Erhöhten (Mk 10.37, cf. Mt 20.21). Die Vollmacht der Zeugen, Feinde mit Feuer zu strafen (Offb 11.5) erinnert an den entsprechenden Wunsch der Zebedaiden in Lk 9.54. Und die Anspielungen auf Mose und Elia (Offb 11.6) beruhen offenbar auf der Verklärungsgeschichte (Mt 17.1–9 parr.), in der Johannes und Jakobus den beiden alttestamentlichen Gestalten gegenber–stehen. Daher scheint Offb 11.3–13 jene frühchristlichen Nachrichten zu bestätigen, denen zufolge der Apostel Johannes ebenso wie sein Bruder den Märtyrertod erlitten hat.

Revisionists have argued that no empire-wide persecution of Christians occurred in the late first century and that Domitian was neither a persecutor of Christians nor an evil, incompetent ruler. This essay agrees with those points but also argues that a closer examination of extant Roman and Christian late first/early second century writers demonstrates that Christians were held in low esteem and suffered in Roman society because of their religious convictions. This study argues that Revelation was a Christian response to religio-political pressures by indigenous Asian pagans upon Christians to conform to traditional social practices in Roman Asia.

Die Psalmen Salomos sind ein für die frühjüdische Vorstellung von der δικαιοσύνην Gottes überaus wichtiges Zeugnis. Werden sie in der Forschung zumeist als Ausdruck pharisäischer Frömmigkeit, in der die Vorstellungen von der Gerechtigkeit Gottes und seiner Barmherzigkeit auseinanderfallen, gewertet, so versucht der vorliegende Beitrag zu zeigen, daβ die Verhältnisbestimmung beider Gröβen differenzierter ist. Die PsSal rücken die Vorstellung von der Gerechtigkeit Gottes eng mit seinem züchtigenden Handeln an den Frommen zusammen und gebrauchen hierfür die Termini παιδεία bzw παιδεύειν. Ein vergleichen-der Blick auf das Qumran-Schrifttum zeigt, daβ beide frühjüdischen Konzeptionen in je eigenerWeise als Hintergrund der paulinischen Rede von der δικαιοσύνην θεοῦ relevant sind.

Paul describes his discipleship and mission, in short his apostolate, in terms of his vision of the resurrection of the exalted Christ. The glorious body of Christ and the spiritual body are similar in substance because one is transformed into the other, a conclusion based on his own experience of visions of the risen Christ in a body but not a physical body in normal sight. This notion of Christ's risen activity contrasts strongly with the later gospel description of the risen Christ. It comes out of Jewish apocalypticism, revalued to express his new Christian vision of the end.
