This article is based on the plenary address given by George M. Whitesides of Harvard University on March 30, 2005, at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Materials science and biomedicine are arguably two of the most exciting fields in science today. Research at the border between them will inevitably be a major focus, and the applications of materials science to problems in biomedicine—that is, biomaterials science—will bud into an important new branch of materials science. Accelerating the growth of this area requires an understanding of two very different fields, and being both thoughtful and entrepreneurial in considering “Why?” “How?” and “Where?” to put them together. In this fusion, biomedicine will, we believe, set the agenda; materials science will follow, and materials scientists must learn biology to be effective.

As revolutionary as microelectronics has been as a technology, there are functions that it does not address. Microelectronics focuses on ever-smaller integrated circuits (ICs) in ever-fewer square millimeters of space to increase clock speeds and decrease the power required for computer processing functions. However, applications requiring control, communications, computing, and sensing over a large area are difficult or costprohibitive to achieve because of the material incompatibilities of traditional ICs with structures, materials, and manufacturing technology. Macroelectronics addresses these applications with the aim of providing active control circuitry in situ over areas of many square meters for displays, solar panels, x-ray imagers, surface measurements, structural shape control, vehicle health monitoring, and other large-system applications. The materials challenges of macroelectronics integrated circuits (MEICs) reviewed in this issue include lightweight flexible substrates, thin-film transistors (TFTs) with IC or near-IC performance, modeling, and manufacturing technology. Compatible component materials, flexible substrates, processing conditions, host system composition, and functionality provide grand challenges that are just beginning to be addressed by researchers.

The discipline of materials science has most commonly been associated with the study of structural or functional materials for engineering applications, such as metals, ceramics, and composites, but there are now, increasingly, great opportunities involving applications to soft matter, including polymers, powders, and biomaterials. The emerging discipline of pharmaceutical materials science attempts to apply physical principles common in materials science to challenges in such areas as drug delivery, control of drug form, manufacture and processing of nanoscopic and microscopic particle systems, and the structure and properties of bulk powders and their assemblies (e.g., tablets) for use in pharmaceutical applications. In this issue of MRS Bulletin, we have attempted to capture a snapshot of this rapidly developing new area of materials research, in order to bring it to the attention of the wider materials science community.

The development of recording materials has been a critical component in the advancement of optical data storage. The continual need for improved performance in both consumer and business applications has pushed forward the capabilities of optical storage. In this issue of MRS Bulletin, we review some of the important developments in the materials behind established technologies such as compact discs, digital versatile discs, and magneto-optical recording; the emerging technology of blue recording; and two technologies that seek to extend the performance roadmap for optical storage, multilayer and holographic recording.

Global markets are pressuring the materials industries to reduce the time span between materials research and materials development. In particular, current approaches to the development and insertion (deployment) of advanced materials in military systems are too time-intensive and expensive. Despite the large investments in defense systems, insertion is not certain, since materials development is often not linked to the system designer needs, with the results frequently being that the materials do not meet their requirements. There is potentially a high payoff for developing methodologies that will accelerate the insertion of materials, thereby saving millions of investment dollars. All industries engaged in developing advanced materials are searching for new methodologies to solve these problems.

Once a new material has been developed, it must be characterized and modeled. Otherwise, components using it cannot be analyzed, and consequently, it cannot be used in engineering products. Therefore, exploiting the full benefits of new (and existing) engineering materials requires specialized informatics tools for data capture, management, analysis, and dissemination. Advances in computing power, coupled with computational modeling and simulation and materials properties databases, will enable materials scientists and engineers to meet these challenges.

The articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin show a variety of applications of the methodologies that are employed in using materials informatics approaches to materials and engineering product development.

With the availability of off-the-shelf commercial ultrafast lasers, a small revolution in materials research is underway, as it is now possible to use these tools without being an expert in the development of the tools themselves. Lasers with short-duration optical pulses—in the sub-picosecond (less than one-trillionth of a second) range—are finding a variety of applications, from basic research on fast processes in materials to new methods for microfabrication by direct writing. A huge range of pulse energies are being used in these applications, from less than 1 nJ (a billionth of a joule) to many joules.

From its inception until today, and for the foreseeable future, magnetic data storage on disks and tape has provided constantly increased storage density.This has required not only constant innovation, but also major breakthroughs in magnetic materials, both for the media and the read head. Today's disk and tape drives take advantage of novel nanoengineered composite magnetic materials and quantum mechanical processes.In this issue of MRS Bulletin, we present a number of review articles by some of the leaders in this rapidly moving field that highlight the key materials science accomplishments that have enabled the tremendous progress in hard disk drive and magnetic tape technologies.Individual articles describe the materials involved in state-of-the-art magnetic recording, advanced media for perpendicular magnetic recording, the materials challenges of achieving high performance in flexible media such as magnetic tape, the materials issues of read heads, and future avenues for magnetic storage beyond magnetic recording, such as nanowires and spintronics.

The development of modern materials science has led to a growing need to understand the phenomena determining the properties of materials and processes on an atomistic level. The interactions between atoms and electrons are governed by the laws of quantum mechanics; hence, accurate and efficient techniques for solving the basic quantum-mechanical equations for complex many-atom, many-electron systems must be developed. Density functional theory (DFT) marks a decisive breakthrough in these efforts, and in the past decade DFT has had a rapidly growing impact not only on fundamental but also industrial research. This article discusses the fundamental principles of DFT and the highly efficient computational tools that have been developed for its application to complex problems in materials science. Also highlighted are state-of-the-art applications in many areas of materials research, such as structural materials, catalysis and surface science, nanomaterials, and biomaterials and geophysics.

Over the last two decades, our ability to create networks of fluidic channels of submillimeter or even sub-micrometer diameters has led to a wide range of microchemical applications. Whereas early efforts were directed toward the development of microanalysis systems, in more recent times the development of microreactors and tools for biotechnology and basic biological studies has emerged. This issue of MRS Bulletin highlights the many different ways in which material properties are crucial in the fabrication, assembly, and operation of micro- and nanofluidic systems. Choice-of-material considerations range from an assessment of whether a desired channel design can be microfabricated in a certain material to whether the material is compatible with the operating conditions (i.e., pressure, temperature) and the chemical composition (solvent, solutes) of the fluid used. Moreover, in certain cases, specific surface or bulk material properties can be used to the benefit of the application of the device. In the development of today's wide range of integrated micro- and nanofluidic applications, a common challenge emerges: meeting the often contradictory set of constraints imposed on the physical and chemical properties of materials by the envisioned applications. This issue reviews these challenges and their solutions and provides an outlook on how the ingenious use of existing and new materials can spur the development of ever more sophisticated micro- and nanofluidic systems.

High-efficiency thermoelectric (TE) materials are important for power-generation devices that are designed to convert waste heat into electrical energy.They can also be used in solid-state refrigeration devices.The conversion of waste heat into electrical energy may play an important role in our current challenge to develop alternative energy technologies to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

An overview of various TE phenomena and materials is provided in this issue of MRS Bulletin. Several of the current applications and key parameters are defined and discussed.Novel applications of TE materials include biothermal batteries to power heart pacemakers, enhanced performance of optoelectronics coupled with solid-state TE cooling, and power generation for deep-space probes via radioisotope TE generators.A number of different systems of potential TE materials are currently under investigation by various research groups around the world, and many of these materials are reviewed in the articles in this issue.These range from thin-film superlattice materials to large single-crystal or polycrystalline bulk materials, and from semiconductors and semimetals to ceramic oxides.The phonon-glass/electron-crystal approach to new TE materials is presented, along with the role of solid-state crystal chemistry.Research criteria for developing new materials are highlighted.

Supported membranes represent an elegant route to designing well-defined fluid interfaces which mimic many physical-chemical properties of biological membranes. Recent years have witnessed rapid growth in the applications of physical and materials science approaches in understanding and controlling lipid membranes. Applying these approaches is enabling the determination of their structure-dynamics-function relations and allowing the design of membrane-mimetic devices. The collection of articles presented in this issue of MRS Bulletin illustrates the breadth of activity in this growing partnership between materials science and biophysics. Together, these articles highlight some of the key challenges of cellular membranes and exemplify their utility in fundamental biophysical studies and technological applications. The topics covered also confirm the importance of lipid membranes as an exciting example of soft condensed matter. We hope that this issue will serve readers by highlighting the intellectual scope and emerging opportunities in this highly interdisciplinary area of materials research.

Optical data storage has become the mainstream technology during the past two decades for distributing audio, video, and software content as well as for recording and archiving personal data. The continuous demand for ever-higher storage capacities and faster data transfer has led to the development of three disc format families using infrared (compact discs), red (digital versatile discs), and blue lasers (Blu-ray discs or high-density DVDs). Substrate materials used in optical discs need to possess a complex property profile with sufficient optical, rheological, mechanical, and processing characteristics to ensure cost-efficient replication, good read/write performance, and long-term media stability. Bisphenol-A polycarbonate (BPA-PC) is the substrate material of choice and has undergone several optimization cycles to always meet new format specifications.

We discuss recent experimental and theoretical results on ultrafast materials dynamics. Intense, femtosecond lasers can deposit energy in a time that is short compared with relaxation processes and can generate extremely large carrier densities that drive bond softening, nonthermal melting, and ablation. In particular, we present optical experiments on electronic softening of coherent phonons in bismuth and x-ray experiments on ultrafast disordering in indium antimonide that probe the bonding of the lattice under successively higher carrier concentrations. We review a number of molecular dynamics simulations and their assumptions, which address nonthermal melting. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the role of void formation in laser ablation.

Pharmaceutical cocrystals are crystalline molecular complexes containing therapeutic molecules. They represent an emerging class of pharmaceutical materials offering the prospect of optimized physical properties. This article highlights important opportunities and challenges associated with the design and synthesis of pharmaceutical cocrystals. Cocrystallization is first placed into context with the more established approaches to physical property optimization of polymorph, hydrate, and salt selection. A directed, intermolecular-interaction-based approach to cocrystal design is described. The enhancement of specific physical properties, such as dissolution rate and physical stability, is illustrated by summarizing several recent reports. Synthetic approaches to cocrystallization are considered; in particular, the selectivity and screening-related opportunities afforded by solid-state grinding and solvent-drop grinding methods are discussed. Finally, an outlook on future developments summarizes the growth potential in this field, especially with regard to targeted, informatics-driven cocrystal screening approaches.

The following article is based on the Outstanding Young Investigator Award presentation given by Harold Y. Hwang of the University of Tokyo on March 29, 2005, at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Hwang was cited for “innovative work on the physics of transition-metal oxides and the atomic-scale synthesis of complex oxide heterostructures.” Perovskite oxides range from insulators to superconductors and can incorporate magnetism as well as couple to phonon instabilities. The close lattice match between many perovskites raises the possibility of growing epitaxial thin-film heterostructures with different ground states that may compete or interact. The recent development of superconducting Josephson junctions, magnetic tunnel junctions, ferroelectric memory cells, and resistive switching can be considered examples within this new heteroepitaxial family. In this context, Hwang presents his studies of electronic structure at atomically abrupt interfaces grown by pulsed laser deposition. Some issues are generic to all heterointerfaces, such as the stability of dopant profiles and diffusion, interface states and depletion, and interface charge arising from polarity discontinuities. A more unusual issue is the charge structure associated with Mott insulator/band insulator interfaces. The question is, how should one consider the correlated equivalent of band bending? This semiconductor concept is based on the validity of rigid single-particle band diagrams, which are known to be an inadequate description for strongly correlated electrons. In addition to presenting an interesting scientific challenge, this question underlies the attempts to develop new applications of doped Mott insulators in device geometries.

Solid surfaces are used extensively as catalysts throughout the chemical industry, in the energy sector, and in environmental protection. Recently, density functional theory has started providing new insight into the atomic-scale mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysis, helping to interpret the large amount of experimental data gathered during the last decades. This article shows how density functional theory can be used to describe the state of the surface during reactions and the rate of catalytic reactions. It will also show how we are beginning to understand the variation in catalytic activity from one transition metal to the next. Finally, the prospects of using calculations to guide the development of new catalysts in industry will be discussed.

Good thermoelectric materials possess low thermal conductivity while maximizing electric carrier transport. This article looks at various classes of materials to understand their behavior and determine methods to modify or “tune” them to optimize their thermoelectric properties. Whether it is the use of “rattlers” in cage structures such as skutterudites, or mixed-lattice atoms such as the complex half-Heusler alloys, the ability to manipulate the thermal conductivity of a material is essential in optimizing its properties for thermoelectric applications.

The functional modification of solid surfaces with plasma membrane models has been drawing increasing attention as a straightforward strategy to bridge soft biological materials and hard inorganic materials. Planar model membranes can be deposited either directly on solid substrates (solid-supported membranes), or on ultrathin polymer supports (polymer-supported membranes) that mimic the generic role of the extracellular matrix and the cell surface. The first part of this review provides an overview of advances in the fabrication of polymer-supported membranes. The middle section describes how such thin polymer interlayers can physically modulate the membrane–substrate contact. The last section introduces several methods to localize membranes and membrane proteins. Finally, some ideas are presented on combining supported membrane concepts with semiconductor technology toward applications in materials science.

As more micro- and nanofluidic methodologies are developed for a growing number of diverse applications, it becomes increasingly apparent that the choice of substrate material can have a profound effect on the eventual performance of a device. This is due mostly to the high surface-to-volume ratio that exists within such small structures. In addition to the obvious limitations related to the choice of solvent, operating temperatures, and pressure, the method of fluidic pumping—in particular, an electrokinetics-based methodology using a combination of electro-osmotic and electrophoresis flows—can further complicate material choice. These factors, however, are only part of the problem; once chemicals or biological materials (e.g., proteins or cells) are introduced into a microfluidic system, surface characteristics will have a profound influence on the activity of such components, which will subsequently influence their performance. This article reviews the common types of materials that are currently used to fabricate microfluidic devices and considers how these materials may influence the overall performance associated with chemical and biological processing. Consideration will also be given to the selection of materials and surface modifications that can aid in exploiting the high surface properties to enhance process performance.
