We show that generalized Gaussian estimates for selfadjoint semigroups (e-tA)t ∈ R+ on L2 imply Lp boundedness of Riesz means and other regularizations of the Schrödinger group (eitA)t ∈ R. This generalizes results restricted to semigroups with a heat kernel, which are due to Sjöstrand, Alexopoulos and more recently Carron, Coulhon and Ouhabaz. This generalization is crucial for elliptic operators A that are of higher order or have singular lower order terms since, in general, their semigroups fail to have a heat kernel.

For any abelian group G and any function f: G → G we define a commutative binary operation or ‘multiplication’ on G in terms of f. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on f for G to extend to a commutative ring with the new multiplication. In the case where G is an elementary abelian p–group of odd order, we classify those functions which extend G to a ring and show, under an equivalence relation we call weak isomorphism, that there are precisely six distinct classes of rings constructed using this method with additive group the elementary abelian p–group of odd order p2.

This article concerns the uniform classification of infinite dimensional real topological vector spaces. We examine a recently isolated linearization procedure for uniform homeomorphisms of the form φ: X →Y, where X is a Banach space with non-trivial type and Y is any topological vector space. For such a uniform homeomorphism φ, we show that Y must be normable and have the same supremal type as X. That Y is normable generalizes theorems of Bessaga and Enflo. This aspect of the theory determines new examples of uniform non-equivalence. That supremal type is a uniform invariant for Banach spaces is essentially due to Ribe. Our linearization approach gives an interesting new proof of Ribe's result.

In this paper we prove a new version of the Cowling-Price theorem for Fourier transforms on Rn. Using this we formulate and prove an uncertainty principle for operators. This leads to an analogue of the Cowling-Price theorem for nilpotent Lie groups. We also prove an exact analogue of the Cowling-Price theorem for the Heisenberg group.

The paper introduces and studies the weighted g-Drazin inverse for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces, extending the concept of the weighted Drazin inverse of Rakočević and Wei (Linear Algebra Appl. 350 (2002), 25–39) and of Cline and Greville (Linear Algebra Appl. 29 (1980), 53–62). We use the Mbekhta decomposition to study the structure of an operator possessing the weighted g-Drazin inverse, give an operator matrix representation for the inverse, and study its continuity. An open problem of Rakočević and Wei is solved.

We call an algebraic group monothetic if it possesses a dense cyclic subgroup. For an arbitrary field k we describe the structure of all, not necessarily affine, monothetic k-groups G and determine in which cases G has a k-rational generator.

We introduce perfect effect algebras and we show that every perfect algebra is an interval in the lexicographical product of the group of all integers with an Abelian directed interpolation po-group. To show this we introduce prime ideals of effect algebras with the Riesz decomposition property (RDP). We show that the category of perfect effect algebras is categorically equivalent to the category of Abelian directed interpolation po-groups. Moreover, we prove that any perfect effect algebra is a subdirect product of antilattice effect algebras with the RDP.

Denote by (H) the symmetry class of tensors over V associated with H and x. Let K (T) ∈ End((H)) be the operator induced by T ∈ End(V), and let DK(T) be the derivation operator of T. The decomposable numerical range W*(DK(T)) of DK(T) is a subset of the classical numerical range W(DK(T)) of DK(T). It is shown that there is a closed star-shaped subset of complex numbers such that

This paper concerns parabolic submonoids of a class of monoids known as singular Artin monoids. The latter class includes the singular braid monoid— a geometric extension of the braid group, which was created for the sole purpose of studying Vassiliev invariants in knot theory. However, those monoids may also be construed (and indeed, are defined) as a formal extension of Artin groups which, in turn, naturally generalise braid groups. It is the case, by van der Lek and Paris, that standard parabolic subgroups of Artin groups are canonically isomorphic to Artin groups. This naturally invites us to consider whether the same holds for parabolic submonoids of singular Artin monoids. We show that it is in fact true when the corresponding Coxeter matrix is of ‘type FC’ hence generalising Corran's result in the ‘finite type’ case.

In this paper we investigate non-central elements of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group whose squares are central. In particular, we describe a commutative subalgebra generated by certain non-central square roots of central elements, and the generic existence of a rank-three submodule of the Hecke algebra contained in the square root of the centre, but not in the centre. The generators for this commutative subalgebra include the longest word and elements related to trivial and sign characters of the Hecke algebra. We find elegant expressions for the squares of such generators in terms of both the minimal basis of the centre and the elementary symmetric functions of Murphy elements.

The concept of loosely Markov dynamical systems is introduced. We show that for these systems the recurrence rates and pointwise dimensions coincide. The systems generated by hyperbolic exponential maps, arbitrary rational functions of the Riemann sphere, and measurable dynamical systems generated by infinite conformal iterated function systems are all checked to be loosely Markov.

Every directed graph defines a Hilbert space and a family of weighted shifts that act on the space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for such shifts and study their C* -algebras. We prove the algebras generated by all shifts of a fixed period are of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type. The limit C* -algebras determined by an increasing sequence of positive integers, each dividing the next, are proved to be isomorphic to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and the linking maps are shown to arise as factor maps. We derive a characterization of simplicity and compute the K-groups for these algebras. We prove a classification theorem for the class of algebras generated by simple loop graphs.

The concept of semi-bounded generalized hypergroups (SBG hypergroups) is developed. These hypergroups are more special than generalized hypergroups introduced by Obata and Wildberger and more general than discrete hypergroups or even discrete signed hypergroups. The convolution of measures and functions is studied. In the case of commutativity we define the dual objects and prove some basic theorems of Fourier analysis. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between orthogonal polynomials and generalized hypergroups. We discuss the Jacobi polynomials as an example.

In this paper we consider systems of diagonal forms with integer coefficients in which each form has a different degree. Every such system has a nontrivial zero in every p-adic field Qp provided that the number of variables is sufficiently large in terms of the degrees. While the number of variables required grows at least exponentially as the degrees and number of forms increase, it is known that if p is sufficiently large then only a small polynomial bound is required to ensure zeros in Qp. In this paper we explore the question of how small we can make the prime p and still have a polynomial bound. In particular, we show that we may allow p to be smaller than the largest of the degrees.

In this article we study the Fourier space of a general hypergroup and its multipliers. The main result of this paper characterizes commutative hypergroups whose Fourier space forms a Banach algebra under pointwise product with an equivalent norm. Among those hypergroups whose Fourier space forms a Banach algebra, we identify a subclass for which the Gelfand spectrum of the Fourier algebra is equal to the underlying hypergroup. This subclass includes for instance, Jacobi hypergroups, Bessel-Kingman hypergroups.

We prove the boundedness of Bergman-type operators on mixed norm spaces Lp·q (φ) for 0 < q < 1 and 0 < p ≤ ∞ of functions on the unit ball of ” with an application to Gleason's problem.

Let G be a finite group, K a field, and V a finite-dimensional K G-module. Write L(V) for the free Lie algebra on V; similarly, let M ( V) be the free metabelian Lie algebra. The action of G extends naturally to these algebras, so they become KG-modules, which are direct sums of finite-dimensional submodules. This paper explores whether indecomposable direct summands of such a KG-module (for some specific choices of G, K and V) must fall into finitely many isomorphism classes. Of course this is not a question unless there exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable KG-modules (that is, K has positive characteristic p and the Sylow p-subgroups of G are non-cyclic) and dim V > 1.

The first two results show that the answer is positive for M(V) when K is finite and dim V = 2, but negative when G is the Klein four-group, the characteristic of K is 2, and V is the unique 3-dimnsional submodule of the regular module D. In the third result, G is again the Klein four-group, K is any field of charateristic 2 with more than 2 elements, V is any faithfull module of dimension 2, and B is the unique 3-dimensional quotient of D; the answer is positive for L(V) if and only if it is positive for each of L(B), L(D), and L(V ⊗ V).

We study the normed spaces of (equivalence classes of) Banach space-valued functions that are Dobrakov, S* or McShane integrable with respect to a Banach space-valued measure, where the norm is the natural one given by the total semivariation of the indefinite integral. We show that simple functions are dense in these spaces. As a consequence we characterize when the corresponding indefinite integrals have norm relatively compact range. On the other hand, we also determine when these spaces are ultrabornological. Our results apply to conclude, for instance, that the spaces of Birkhoff (respectively McShane) integrable functions defined on a complete (respectively quasi-Radon) probability space, endowed with the Pettis norm, are ultrabornological.

This paper concerns a generalization of the Markov branching process that preserves the random walk jump chain, but admits arbitrary positive jump rates. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for regularity, including a generalization of the Harris-Dynkin integral condition when the jump rates are reciprocals of a Hausdorff moment sequence. Behaviour of the expected time to extinction is found, and some asymptotic properties of the explosion time are given for the case where extinction cannot occur. Existence of a unique invariant measure is shown, and conditions found for unique solution of the Forward equations. The ergodicity of a resurrected version is investigated.

Matsumoto [10] remarked that some locally projectively flat Finsler spaces of non-zero constant curvature may be Riemannian spaces of non-zero constant curvature. The Riemannian connection, however, must be metric compatible, and this requirement places restrictions on the geodesic coefficients for the Finsler space in the form of a system of partial differential equations. In this paper, we derive this system of equations for the case where the geodesic coefficients are quadratic in the tangent space variables yi, and determine the solutions. We recover two standard Remannian metrics of non-zero constant curvature from this class of solutions.
