The incompressible slow viscous flow of a power-law shear-thinning fluid in a wedge-shaped region is considered in the specific instance where the stress is a very small power of the strain rate. Asymptotic analysis is used to determine the structure of similarity solutions. The flow is shown to possess an outer region with boundary layers at the walls. The boundary layers have an intricate structure consisting of a transition layer 0(ɛ) adjoining an inner layer O(ɛlnɛ), which further adjoins an inner-inner layer 0(ɛ) next to the wall. Explicit solutions are found in all the regions and the existence of ‘dead zones’ in the flow is discussed.

A model for superconductors co-existing with normal materials is presented. The model, which applies to such situations as superconductors containing normal impurities and superconductor/normal material junctions, is based on a generalization of the Ginsburg–Landau model for superconductivity. After presenting the model, it is shown that it reduces to well-known models due to de Gennes for certain superconducting/normal interfaces, and in particular, for Josephson junctions. A provident feature of the modified model is that it can, by itself, account for all of these as well as other physical situations. The results of some preliminary computational experiments using the model are then provided; these include flux pinning by normal impurities and a superconductor/normal/superconductor junction. A side benefit of the modified model is that, through its use, these computational simulations are more easily obtained.

A class of three-dimensional crack problems is considered, of which a prototype example is provided by a half-space containing a long internal crack, located in a plane perpendicular to the boundary. By means of an asymptotic procedure, the original three-dimensional problem is split up into a sequence of two-dimensional formulations. Results of its numerical implementation are in good agreement with results of more computer-intensive finite-element calculations.

We discuss a one-dimensional model for a Bridgman crystal grower, where the removal of heat is described by an internal heat sink. A consequence is the apparent existence of mushy regions for relatively large velocities of the cooling machine; these mushy regions are an artefact of the one-dimensional approximation. We show that for some types of cooling profiles there exists a critical speed for the existence of mushy regions, whereas for different cooling profiles no such critical speed exists. The presence of a mushy region may indicate a strong curvature of the liquid/solid interface in the real situation.

We discuss the question of uniqueness of planar flames for a simple one-step chemical reaction. We show that when the Lewis number is less than unity (i.e. species diffusion is larger than heat diffusion) uniqueness cannot be generally assumed. An example with three flames, two of them being stable, is exhibited. Other related questions, such as sufficient conditions for uniqueness to hold and high activation energy limits, are discussed.

The problem of maximization of the critical Mach number in a subsonic flow of an ideal gas is considered. The Chaplygin gas approximation and the integral representation of the solution of the inverse boundary-value problem of aerohydrodynamics are used to reduce the problem to a special minimax one. The exact solution of the latter is obtained on the basis of the Lindelöf principle. An upper estimate for the critical Mach number is obtained. The results are generalized for the case of airfoil cascades. Some open problems are described.

In Part I of this paper (Terrill & Byatt-Smith, 1993) the problem of the flow between an obstacle in the form of a wedge and a porous flexible tow was modelled using lubrication theory. In the region close to the wedge where bending is important the following equation

was derived for the non-dimensional gap width, H(X), between the tow and the wedge.

The diffraction of time-harmonic waves in a nonlinear medium with periodic structure is studied in this paper. In particular second harmonic generation – an important phenomenon in nonlinear optics-is modelled. The model, derived from a general nonlinear system of Maxwell's equations, is shown to have a unique solution for all but a discrete number of frequencies. The problem is solved numerically by combining a method of finite elements and a fixed-point iteration scheme. Numerical experiments for some simple grating structures are presented and discussed.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the system

we prove u → e uniformly in x as t → ∞. Of particular interest is the motion of the zeros (vortices) of u. In this case, all zeros disappear after a finite time.

An analysis is made of the damping of sound and structural vibrations by vorticity production in the apertures of a bias flow, perforated elastic plate. Unsteady motion causes vorticity to be generated at the aperture edges; the vorticity and its energy are swept away by the bias flow and result in a net loss of acoustic and vibrational energy. In this paper we investigate the interaction of an arbitrary fluid-structure disturbance with a small circular aperture in the presence of a high Reynolds number, low Mach number bias flow. By considering the limit in which the aperture is small compared to the length scale of the impinging disturbance, it is shown that the effect of the interaction can be represented by a concentrated source in the plate bending wave equation consisting of a delta function and two of its axisymmetric derivatives. A generalized bending wave equation is then formulated for a plate perforated with an homogeneous distribution of small, bias flow circular apertures. This equation is used to predict the attenuation of sound and resonant bending waves by vorticity production. Acoustic damping is found to be significant provided the fluid loading is sufficiently small for the plate to be regarded as rigid (e.g. for an aluminium plate in air when the frequency is not too small). On the other hand, a bending wave is effectively damped only when the fluid loading is large enough for the wave to produce a substantial pressure drop across the plate; when this occurs the predicted attenuations are comparable with those usually achieved by the application of elastomeric damping materials. Numerical predictions are presented for steel and aluminium plates in air and water.

We present a method of solution of a class of fracture problems in the theory of elasticity. The method can be applied to any problem reducible to Poisson's equation, e.g. heat conduction and mass diffusion in solids, theory of consolidation and the like. The novelty of the paper is that we address regions of layered composites with notches, or, in a particular case, with a crack. Within the framework of classical analysis, we apply Fourier and Mellin transforms, 'fit' them together, and reduce the problem to solving a singular integral equation with fixed singularities on a semi-axis. We show the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the equations under consideration, and justify the asymptotics necessary for applications. We show the practical usefulness of the method on the examples of an antiplane problem of fracture mechanics. From our solution, we are able to find the stress intensity factor in the case when a crack tip penetrates a layered composite consisting of 60 layers, and show the limits of applicability of the anisotropic model of such composites.

Ovsiannikov's partially invariant solutions of differential equations generalize Lie's group invariant solutions. A partially invariant solution is only interesting if it cannot be discovered more readily as an invariant solution. Roughly, a partially invariant solution that can be discovered more directly by Lie's method is said to be reducible. In this paper, I develop conditions under which a partially invariant solution or a class of such solutions must be reducible, and use these conditions both to obtain non-reducible solutions to a system of hyperbolic conservation laws, and to demonstrate that some systems have no non-reducible solutions. I also demonstrate that certain elliptic systems have no non-reducible solutions.

Flows with free boundaries in a Hele-Shaw cell provide a unique opportunity to study non-linear boundary dynamics using rigorous analytic approaches. While of limited direct ‘practical value’, these studies give rise to a plethora of new phenomena and insights which may serve as beacons in the turbulent ocean of moving free boundaries and pattern forming. This paper gives a brief summary of the authors' studies of Hele-Shaw flows with free boundaries and some related problems based upon Richardson's approach. Some promising directions of further research are also discussed.

We study radially symmetric stationary points of the functional

where u denotes the density of a fluid confined to a container Ω, W(u) is the course-grain free energy and ε accounts for surface energy. Under the further assumption of small energy, that is

for small ε, we prove existence of precisely two solutions for the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation. Each of these solutions is monotone in the radial direction and converges as ε→0 to one of two possible radially symmetric single interface minimizers of E0. Our main tool is the method of matched asymptotic expansions from which we construct exact solutions.

A one-dimensional free boundary problem arising in the modelling of internal oxidation of binary alloys is studied in this paper. The free boundary of this problem is determined by the equation u = 0, where u is the solution of a parabolic partial differential equation with discontinuous coefficients across the free boundary. Local existence, uniqueness and the regularity of the free boundary are established. Global existence is also studied.

Diffusion-driven instability in systems of reaction-diffusion equations is a commonly used model for pattern formation in both embryology and ecology. In ecological applications, model parameters tend to oscillate in time, because of either daily or seasonal fluctuations in the environment. I investigate the effects of such fluctuations on diffusion-driven instability by considering analytically the possibility of Turing bifurcations when the parameter values (diffusion coefficients and kinetic parameters) oscillate in time between two sets of constant values, with a period that is either very short or very long compared to the time scale of the growth and predation kinetics. I show that oscillations in the kinetics can have quite different effects from oscillations in the dispersal terms. I also discuss the comparison between the solution forms predicted by linear theory and the numerical solutions of a simple nonlinear predator-prey model.

A general method of placing variational bounds on the effective scalar conductivity of random heterogeneous solids is proposed. The method utilizes the Hashin-Shtrikman variational principle and trial fields which are obtained upon truncating the functional series expansion for the polarization field in the medium. It is shown how the earlier variational procedures due to Hashin and Shtrikman, Milton and Phan-Thien and Willis find natural places in the proposed general scheme. The new results reported include, for example, the fact of nonexistence of certain Gaussian-like random media and, for dispersions of spheres with volume fraction c, an exact O(c2) relation for the effective conductivity which contains absolutely convergent integrals only.
