The characterisation of those shapes that can be made by the gravity sag-bending manufacturing process used to produce car windscreens and lenses is modelled as an inverse problem in linear plate theory. The corresponding second-order partial differential equation for the Young's modulus is shown to change type (possibly several times) for certain target shapes. We consider the implications of this behaviour for the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the inverse problem for some frame geometries. In particular, we show that no general boundary conditions for the inverse problem can be prescribed if it is desired to achieve certain kinds of target shapes.

Recent numerical evidence [8, 28, 33] suggests that in the Hele–Shaw suction problem with vanishingly small surface tension $\gamma$, the free boundary generically approaches the sink in a wedge-like configuration, blow-up occurring when the wedge apex reaches the sink. Sometimes two or more such wedges approach the sink simultaneously [33]. We construct a family of solutions to the zero-surface tension (ZST) problem in which fluid is injected at the (coincident) apices of an arbitrary number $N$ of identical infinite wedges, of arbitrary angle. The time reversed suction problem then models what is observed numerically with non-zero surface tension. We conjecture that (for a given value of $N$) a particular member of this family of ZST solutions, with special complex plane singularity structure, is selected in the limit $\gamma\,{\to}\,0$.

For nonlinear hyperbolic equations of a gas dynamic type with flow acceleration and friction terms, the classification of a special class of periodic travelling waves, which are known as roll waves, is given. As an illustration, the shallow water equations for the inclined channels of an arbitrary cross-section are considered. The analysis shows that the flow patterns depend upon the sign of the second derivative of the pressure function. The roll waves in regular channels with the convex pressure have the same structure as the waves described in Dressler [6]. For a nonconvex pressure function, the multi-jump configuration of roll waves is found.

We present a mathematical model describing the distribution of monomer and micellar surfactant in a steady straining flow beneath a fixed free surface. The model includes adsorption of monomer surfactant at the surface and a single-step reaction whereby $n$ monomer molecules combine to form each micelle. The equations are analysed asymptotically and numerically and the results are compared with experiments. Previous studies of such systems have often assumed equilibrium between the monomer and micellar phases, i.e. that the reaction rate is effectively infinite. Our analysis shows that such an approach inevitably fails under certain physical conditions and also cannot accurately match some experimental results. Our theory provides an improved fit with experiments and allows the reaction rates to be estimated.

Capillary waves on fluid sheets are computed in the presence of a uniform electric field acting horizontally with respect to the undisturbed configuration. The fluid is taken to be inviscid, incompressible and nonconducting. In previous work (Papageorgiou & Vanden-Broeck [14]) symmetric travelling waves were investigated. In this paper we show that there are in addition antisymmetric waves. These waves are calculated numerically for arbitrary amplitudes and wavelengths and the effect of the electric field is studied. The numerical procedure is based on a reformulation of the problem as a system of nonlinear integro–differential equations.

When a dry sphere sinks into a fluid, a funnel-shaped free surface develops behind the sphere if the sinking occurs faster than the surface wetting. If the fluid is viscoelastic, the interface can become unstable to a loss of axisymmetry. The stress near this surface concentrates into boundary layers, as also seen in other free surface extensional flows of viscoelastic fluids. At high Deborah number and low Reynolds number, the qualitative behaviour can be recovered by considering the static equilibrium of a stretched elastic membrane in an hydrostatic pressure field. We treat this problem in the framework of finite elasticity using a neo-Hookean constitutive model, and show how the conditions of instability can be recovered. A numerical study of this model is presented.

A vortex sheet is a surface across which the velocity field of incompressible and inviscid flows has a jump discontinuity. Mathematical and numerical studies reveal that a two-dimensional vortex sheet, which is governed by the Birkhoff–Rott equation, acquires a singularity in finite time without forming rolling-up spiral. On the other hand, numerical computation of a regularized Birkhoff–Rott equation shows that the vortex sheet evolves into a rolling-up doubly branched spiral. Because of the finite-time singularity, it is impossible to regard the rolling-up spiral as a solution of the Birkhoff–Rott equation as long as time is real. However, it may be possible to analytically continue the equation to the spiral along a path to get around the singularity in complex-time plane. In the present article, we consider singularities in complex-time plane for the regularized Birkhoff–Rott equation by numerical means. Distribution of the complex singularities and their limiting behaviour indicate that it is absolutely impossible to perform analytic continuation in complex-time domain to the spiral solution. Furthermore, we propose a simple model of a doubly branched spiral and investigate it mathematically. The model is successful in approximating the rolling-up motion of the vortex sheet. Comparing the vortex-sheet motion with the model indicate that the doubly branched spiral with infinite windings at the centre could be a solution of the Birkhoff–Rott equation beyond the singularity time.

This paper presents a powerful approximate method for modelling the steady single-phase flow into a horizontal well completed with an Inflow Control Device (ICD) in an anisotropic reservoir. Two types of problems are investigated: the forward problem, which allows the user to find the flux distribution along the wellbore for a specified pressure drawdown, and the inverse problem to determine the ICD properties when the flux or reservoir pressure drawdown along the wellbore is given. The method is based on structuring the flow patterns around and, inside the wellbore and across the ICD and on the reduction of the dimensionality of the problem by using boundary integral equations. The resulting one dimensional singular nonlinear integro-differential equation is solved numerically, using the appropriate quadrature formula for singular integrals with Cauchy kernels.

Mathematical models for the growth of nutrient-rich tissue are presented and a number of properties of the resulting models outlined. The focus is on obtaining broadly applicable results for the simplest appropriate formulations by using matched-asymptotic, moving-boundary and thin-film approaches; the relevance of the results to a variety of specific biological applications will be addressed elsewhere, as will the inclusion of additional physical phenomena.

We prove the uniqueness for the inverse problem of determining a coefficient $q(x)$ in $\partial _t^2 u(x,t) = \uDelta u(x,t) - q(x)u(x,t)$ for $x \in R^n$ and $t > 0$, from observations of $u\vert_{\Gamma\times(0,T)}$ and the normal derivative $\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}\vert_{\Gamma\times(0,T)}$ where $\Gamma$ is an arbitrary $C^{\infty}$-hypersurface. Our main result asserts the uniqueness of $q$ over $R^n$ provided that $T > 0$ is sufficiently large and $q$ is analytic near $\Gamma$ and outside a ball. The proof depends on Fritz John's global Holmgren theorem and the uniqueness by a Carleman estimate.

We analyze a model for non-isothermal superconductivity, derived independently by G. Maugin, and K. Miya and S. A. Zhou. The model is described by a parabolic system based on the Time-Dependent Ginzburg–Landau (TDGL) equation, the Maxwell equations, and an energy equation such that the Clausius–Duhem inequality holds. The principal unknown fields are the complex valued Ginzburg–Landau order parameter $\psi$, the magnetic vector potential $A$, and the temperature $T$. A significant feature for this model is that it accounts for the interchange of thermal and electro-magnetic energies through Joule heating. The sensitivity of superconducting materials to thermal variations is a major obstacle to their applications. In practice one sees that time varying currents and magnetic fields generate thermal energy, producing ‘hot spots’ and increasing the temperature. This can result in suppressing superconductivity, i.e. $\psi$ tending to $0$. Our principal result is that we exhibit this phenomenon. We prove that if the electro-magnetic energy of the superconductor is sufficiently large at time $t\,{=}\,0$ then $T$ will rise beyond the critical temperature, $T_c$, and $\psi\to 0$ as $t\to\infty$. Earlier analytic work investigating electro-dynamic effects in superconductivity centered on an isothermal model consisting of the TDGL equation and Maxwell equations. This setting takes into account just electro-magnetic effects and produces markedly different evolutions.

The modeling of the motion of a contact line, the triple point at which solid, liquid and air meet, is a major outstanding problem in the fluid mechanics of thin films [2, 9]. In this paper, we compare two well-known models in the specific context of Marangoni driven films. The precursor model replaces the contact line by a sharp transition between the bulk fluid and a thin layer of fluid, effectively pre-wetting the solid; the Navier slip model replaces the usual no-slip boundary condition by a singular slip condition that is effective only very near the contact line. We restrict attention to traveling wave solutions of the thin film PDE for a film driven up an inclined planar solid surface by a thermally induced surface tension gradient. This involves analyzing third order ODE that depend on several parameters. The two models considered here have subtle differences in their description, requiring a careful treatment when comparing traveling waves and effective contact angles. Numerical results exhibit broad agreement between the two models, but the closest comparison can be done only for a rather restricted range of parameters. The driven film context gives contact angle results quite different from the case of a film moving under the action of gravity alone. The numerical technique for exploring phase portraits for the third order ODE is also used to tabulate the kinetic relation and nucleation condition, information that can be used with the underlying hyperbolic conservation law to explain the rich combination of wave structures observed in simulations of the PDE and in experiments [3, 15].

Ferromagnetic materials may present a complicated domain structure, due in part to the nonlocal nature of the self interactions. In this article we present a detailed study of the structure of one-dimensional magnetic domain walls in uniaxial ferromagnetic materials, and in particular, of the Néel and Bloch walls. We analyze the logarithmic tail of the Néel wall, and identify the characteristic length scales in both the Néel and Bloch walls. This analysis is used to obtain the optimal energy scaling for the Néel and Bloch walls. Our results are illustrated with numerical simulations of one-dimensional walls. A new model for the study of ferromagnetic thin films is presented.

We consider a Stefan problem with a kinetic condition at the free boundary and prove the convergence of the solution as $t$ tends to infinity either to a travelling wave solution or to a self-similar solution. The key idea is to transform this problem into a problem for a single nonlocal parabolic equation which admits a comparison principle.

A model for the dynamic thermomechanical behavior of a viscoelastic beam which is in frictional contact with a rigid rotating wheel is presented. It describes a simple braking system in which the wheel comes to a stop as a result of the frictional traction generated by the beam. Friction is modelled with a temperature and slip rate dependent coefficient of friction. Frictional heat generation is taken into account as well as the wheel temperature evolution, and the wear of the beam's contacting end. The model is formulated as a variational inequality. A FEM numerical scheme for the model is described, implemented, and the results of numerical simulations are shown.

In this paper we study a nonlocal parabolic/elliptic system which models thermistor behaviour in cases where heat losses to the surrounding gas play a significant role. The existence of time periodic solutions for the system is established through Faedo-Galerkin approximations and the Leray–Schauder degree theory. We show that for the small gas pressure case, the temperature of the time periodic solutions is positive. Moreover we consider the long time behaviour of the system and prove the existence of a uniform attractor. Finally, the finite dimensionality of the attractor is discussed.

Movement of biological organisms is frequently initiated in response to a diffusible or otherwise transported signal, and in its simplest form this movement can be described by a diffusion equation with an advection term. In systems in which the signal is localized in space the question arises as to whether aggregation of a population of indirectly-interacting organisms, or localization of a single organism, is possible under suitable hypotheses on the transition rules and the production of a control species that modulates the transition rates. It has been shown [25] that continuum approximations of reinforced random walks show aggregation and even blowup, but the connections between solutions of the continuum equations and of the master equation for the corresponding lattice walk were not studied. Using variational techniques and the existence of a Lyapunov functional, we study these connections here for certain simplified versions of the model studied earlier. This is done by relating knowledge about the shape of the minimizers of a variational problem to the asymptotic spatial structure of the solution.

A class of exact mathematical solutions describing distributed regions of uniform vorticity attached to two solid walls meeting at an angle $2\alpha$ is derived. Exterior to the uniform vorticity region the flow is quiescent and irrotational. The mathematical method used is a generalization of ideas original presented in Crowdy [4] combined with elements of conformal mapping theory associated with a differential equation method due to Polubarinova-Kochina traditionally applied in finding the solution to various free boundary problems.

A variety of models on the interaction between glucose and insulin have been suggested over the last 50 years. One, developed by Sturis et al. [19], and consisting of six nonlinear ordinary differential equations, has been widely accepted. However, the model has the disadvantage of containing auxiliary variables which have no clinical interpretation. In this paper we study an alternative model which incorporates a time delay explicitly, negating the need for the auxiliary equations. A simplifying assumption of having just one insulin compartment reduces the number of equations still further. We then study the resulting system of two differential delay equations, establishing results on positivity, boundedness, persistence and global asymptotic stability. For the latter, two quite different approaches are employed: comparison principles and Lyapunov functionals. The two approaches provide different sets of sufficient conditions for global stability, so that we investigate different regions of parameter space.

We study travelling wave solutions of a one-dimensional two-phase Free Boundary Problem, which models premixed flames propagating in a gaseous mixture with dust. The model combines diffusion of mass and temperature with reaction at the flame front, the reaction rate being temperature dependent. The radiative effects due to the presence of dust account for the divergence of the radiative flux entering the equation for temperature. This flux is modelled by the Eddington equation. In an appropriate limit the divergence of the flux takes the form of a nonlinear heat loss term. The resulting reduced model is able to capture a hysteresis effect that appears if the amount of fuel in front of the flame, or equivalently, the adiabatic temperature is taken as a control parameter.
