Let K be a CM number field and GK its absolute Galois group. A representation of GK is said to be polarized if it is isomorphic to the contragredient of its outer complex conjugate, up to a twist by a power of the cyclotomic character. Absolutely irreducible polarized representations of GK have a sign ±1, generalizing the fact that a self-dual absolutely irreducible representation is either symplectic or orthogonal. If Π is a regular algebraic, polarized, cuspidal automorphic representation of GLn(𝔸K), and if ρ is a p-adic Galois representation attached to Π, then ρ is polarized and we show that all of its polarized irreducible constituents have sign +1 . In particular, we determine the orthogonal/symplectic alternative for the Galois representations associated to the regular algebraic, essentially self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representations of GLn (𝔸F) when F is a totally real number field.

We present a level-raising result for families of p-adic automorphic forms for a definite quaternion algebra D over ℚ. The main theorem is an analogue of a theorem for classical automorphic forms due to Diamond and Taylor. We show that certain families of forms old at a prime l intersect with families of l-new forms (at a non-classical point). One of the ingredients in the proof of Diamond and Taylor’s theorem (which also played a role in earlier work of Taylor) is the definition of a suitable pairing on the space of automorphic forms. In our situation one cannot define such a pairing on the infinite dimensional space of p-adic automorphic forms, so instead we introduce a space defined with respect to a dual coefficient system and work with a pairing between the usual forms and the dual space. A key ingredient is an analogue of Ihara’s lemma which shows an interesting asymmetry between the usual and the dual spaces.

In this work, we study the intersection cohomology of Siegel modular varieties. The goal is to express the trace of a Hecke operator composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism (at a good place) on this cohomology in terms of the geometric side of Arthur’s invariant trace formula for well-chosen test functions. Our main tools are the results of Kottwitz about the contribution of the cohomology with compact support and about the stabilization of the trace formula, Arthur’s L2 trace formula and the fixed point formula of Morel [Complexes pondérés sur les compactifications de Baily–Borel. Le cas des variétés de Siegel, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 21 (2008), 23–61]. We ‘stabilize’ this last formula, i.e. express it as a sum of stable distributions on the general symplectic groups and its endoscopic groups, and obtain the formula conjectured by Kottwitz in [Shimura varieties and λ-adic representations, in Automorphic forms, Shimura varieties and L-functions, Part I, Perspectives in Mathematics, vol. 10 (Academic Press, San Diego, CA, 1990), 161–209]. Applications of the results of this article have already been given by Kottwitz, assuming Arthur’s conjectures. Here, we give weaker unconditional applications in the cases of the groups GSp4 and GSp6.

For the dual pair Sp(n)×O(m) with m≤n, we prove an identity between a special value of a certain Eisenstein series and the regularized integral of a theta function. The proof uses the functional equation of the Eisenstein series and the regularized Siegel–Weil formula for Sp(n)×O(2n+2−m). Analogous results for unitary and orthogonal groups are included.

In this paper, we prove some one level density results for the low-lying zeros of families of L-functions. More specifically, the families under consideration are that of L-functions of holomorphic Hecke eigenforms of level 1 and weight k twisted with quadratic Dirichlet characters and that of cubic and quartic Dirichlet L-functions.

We generalize the method of A. R. Booker (Poles of Artin L-functions and the strong Artin conjecture, Ann. of Math. (2) 158 (2003), 1089–1098; MR 2031863(2004k:11082)) to prove a version of the converse theorem of Jacquet and Langlands with relaxed conditions on the twists by ramified idèle class characters.

We use the theory of finite W-algebras associated to nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra to give another proof of Mœglin’s theorem about completely prime primitive ideals in the enveloping algebra U(𝔤). We also make some new observations about Joseph’s Goldie rank polynomials in Cartan type A.

For two real characters ψ,ψ′ of conductor dividing 8 define where and the subscript 2 denotes the fact that the Euler factor at 2 has been removed. These double Dirichlet series can be extended to possessing a group of functional equations isomorphic to D12. The convexity bound for Z(s,w;ψ,ψ′) is |sw(s+w)|1/4+ε for ℜs=ℜw=1/2. It is proved that Moreover, the following mean square Lindelöf-type bound holds: for any Y1,Y2≥1.

For p=3 and p=5, we exhibit a finite nonsolvable extension of ℚ which is ramified only at p, proving in the affirmative a conjecture of Gross. Our construction involves explicit computations with Hilbert modular forms.

We prove a mean-value result for derivatives of L-functions at the center of the critical strip for a family of forms obtained by twisting a fixed form by quadratic characters with modulus which can be represented as sum of two squares. Such a family of forms is related to elliptic fibrations given by the equation q(t)y2=f(x) where q(t)=t2+1 and f(x) is a cubic polynomial. The aim of the paper is to establish a prototype result for such quadratic families. Though our method can be generalized to prove similar results for any positive definite quadratic form in place of sum of two squares, we refrain from doing so to keep the presentation as clear as possible.

We prove modularity lifting theorems for ℓ-adic Galois representations of any dimension satisfying a unitary type condition and a Fontaine–Laffaille condition at ℓ. This extends the results of Clozel, Harris and Taylor, and the subsequent work by Taylor. The proof uses the Taylor–Wiles method, as improved by Diamond, Fujiwara, Kisin and Taylor, applied to Hecke algebras of unitary groups, and results of Labesse on stable base change and descent from unitary groups to GLn.

We prove the μ-part of the main conjecture for modular forms along the anticyclotomic Zp-extension of a quadratic imaginary field. Our proof consists of first giving an explicit formula for the algebraic μ-invariant, and then using results of Ribet and Takahashi showing that our formula agrees with Vatsal’s formula for the analytic μ-invariant.

Let L/k be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G. For every odd prime p satisfying certain mild technical hypotheses, we use values of Artin L-functions to construct an element in the centre of the group ring ℤ(p)[G] that annihilates the p-part of the class group of L.

We study the possible weights of an irreducible two-dimensional mod p representation of which is modular in the sense that it comes from an automorphic form on a definite quaternion algebra with centre F which is ramified at all places dividing p, where F is a totally real field. In most cases we determine the precise list of possible weights; in the remaining cases we determine the possible weights up to a short and explicit list of exceptions.

We prove two flat descent results in the setting of Artin n-stacks. First of all, a stack for the etale topology which is an Artin n-stack (in the sense of Simpson and Toën–Vezzosi) is also a stack for the flat (fppf) topology. Moreover, an n-stack, for the fppf topology, which admits a flat (fppf) n-atlas is an Artin n-stack (i.e. possesses a smooth n-atlas). We deduce from these two results a comparison between etale and fppf cohomologies (with coefficients in non-smooth group schemes and also non-abelian). This work is written in the setting of the derived stacks of Toën and Vezzosi, and all of these results are therefore also valid for derived Artin n-stacks.

Let K be a finite unramified extension of Qp. We parametrize the (φ,Γ)-modules corresponding to reducible two-dimensional -representations of GK and characterize those which have reducible crystalline lifts with certain Hodge–Tate weights.

Let 𝒱 be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field k. We solve Berthelot’s conjectures on the stability of the holonomicity over smooth projective formal 𝒱-schemes. Then we build a category of F-complexes of arithmetic 𝒟-modules over quasi-projective k-varieties with bounded and holonomic cohomology. We obtain its stability under Grothendieck’s six operations.

The local Langlands conjectures imply that to every generic supercuspidal irreducible representation of G2 over a p-adic field, one can associate a generic supercuspidal irreducible representation of either PGSp6 or PGL3. We prove this conjectural dichotomy, demonstrating a precise correspondence between certain representations of G2 and other representations of PGSp6 and PGL3. This correspondence arises from theta correspondences in E6 and E7, analysis of Shalika functionals, and spin L-functions. Our main result reduces the conjectural Langlands parameterization of generic supercuspidal irreducible representations of G2 to a single conjecture about the parameterization for PGSp 6.

We show that the semisimple part of the trace formula converges for a wide class of test functions.

Let E/ℚ be an elliptic curve and let D<0 be a sufficiently large fundamental discriminant. If contains Heegner points of discriminant D, those points generate a subgroup of rank at least |D|δ, where δ>0 is an absolute constant. This result is compatible with the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
